Votes are still being counted, and while it could take weeks before final tallies are known across the country, it’s clear that Tuesday’s midterm elections drew fewer voters than the 2020 general and 2018 midterms.
Massachusetts voter turnout in Tuesday’s election was about 50 percent, according to current unofficial counts. Across the North Shore, turnout varied. Swampscott, Saugus, and Peabody mirrored statewide turnout at about 50 percent. In Marblehead, turnout was lower than the state average at 41 percent. The highest turnouts took place in Lynnfield at 62 percent, Lynn at 68 percent, and Nahant at 70 percent.
Statewide, Democrats Maura Healey and Kim Driscoll made history as the first female duo elected to the Massachusetts governorship and lieutenant governorship, respectively. Voters also chose Democrat Andrea Campbell as the state’s Attorney General, Democrat Seth Moulton as congressman, Democrat Joan Lovely as the Second Essex District senator, and Brendan Crighton as the Third Essex District senator.
Three of four questions passed statewide: Question 1, which proposed an additional tax on income over $1 million; Question 2, which sought to regulate dental insurer spending; and Question 4, which sought to codify a rule allowing undocumented immigrants to apply for driver’s licenses. Question 3, which proposed to expand the availability of alcohol sale licenses, failed.
In Marblehead, Swampscott, and some precincts in Lynn, voters also answered a fifth question relating to their State Representative-elect Jenny Armini. It asked voters if their representative “should be directed by the Electorate to vote for Transparency” in the Massachusetts State House. It passed in a landslide.
