Once again on Thursday morning, the Prep’s Carson Browne was Carson Browne. He recorded 202 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles’ 27-14 win over rival Xaverian.
Talk about early momentum. On the game’s first play, the Prep’s Jesse Ofurie came up with an interception off a deep pass from Xaverian. He also broke up two passes in the first quarter.
The enemy struck first, however, as the Hawks’ Charlie Comella delivered on a catch-and-run for 52 yards and a 7-0 Xaverian lead. Ofurie shined on the offensive end shortly after for the Prep, hauling in a Deacon Robillard pass in the endzone for a 20-yard touchdown to tie things up.
A Jackson Selby field goal later – from 26 yards – and the Prep held a 10-7 lead into the break.
Browne turned things up to begin the second half, racing for a 54-yard touchdown after a broken tackle to put the Eagles ahead 17-7 after the extra point. He struck again for a 5-yard touchdown that gave Prep a commanding 24-7 lead.
Despite another Hawks touchdown, the buzzer sounded on their comeback bid. St. John’s Prep held on for a 27-14 victory over Xaverian with Browne leading the way.
“It was a highly contested game, two great teams,” Prep Head Coach St. Pierre said. “I thought our defense was about as strong as you can play.”
The Eagles’ John Droggitis showed up on defense, adding 3.5 sacks to the statistics page on Turkey Day. The Prep had seven sacks in total.
Prep’s next stop: the Division 1 Super Bowl against Springfield Central on Dec. 3 at Gillette Stadium with kickoff set for 12:30 p.m.
