There will be one very interested observer when the St. Mary’s boys basketball team hosts St.
Benedict’s Prep as part of the Mosakowski Tipoff Event Friday night at 7.
Bill Mosakowski is the chair of the board of trustees at St. Mary’s and a longtime supporter of
St. Benedict’s, a Catholic school located in Newark, N.J. He is thrilled to see the teams come
together on the court.
“This is something greater than basketball,” Mosakowski said. “It’s a chance for the players to
trade stories and for St. Mary’s to play a nationally recognized powerhouse that has won
multiple state championships.”
St. Benedict’s is undefeated and ranked in the top 20 nationally. St. Mary’s is coming off a state
championship, so something has to give.
Mosakowski is a friend and admirer of St. Benedict’s Headmaster Fr. Edwin Leahy, O.S.B., whom
St. Mary’s presented with its Cardinal Cushing Award in 2018.
“St. Benedict’s changed the way education is delivered,” Mosakowski said. “They are changing
the lives of their students and giving some of the poorest kids the opportunity to go the best
colleges and universities.”
The St. Mary’s-St. Benedict’s game is the third game of an outstanding tripleheader that kicks
off with the Busche Academy boys team, coached by former Lynn English coach Antonio
Anderson, playing Bradford Christian at 3:45 p.m. Ali Barry, who played a key role in St. Mary’s
state championship last year, plays for Busche.
The middle game pits the St. Mary’s girls team, which has won two state titles in a row, against
Woburn, a Middlesex League power, at 5:30. St. Mary’s Coach and Athletic Director Jeff
Newhall is pleased to have six quality teams coming to Tremont Street.
“This is a tremendous way to kick off the season,” Newhall said. “We are fortunate to have Bill
Mosakowski as a trustee and benefactor. The fact that he has a relationship with St. Benedict’s
and was able to get them to come is great for St. Mary’s and for the City.”
