What a season it was

Joey Barrett

December 20, 2022 by Joey Barrett

Well, that’s a wrap. After Monday evening’s Item All-Star award ceremony for fall sports, I thought it’d be a good time to share how amazing this past season has been.

When I got to the North Shore, I didn’t know what to expect. I came from a town that worshiped high school athletics, and no one’s happier than me to say – schools up here are the same way.

My experience has been fantastic thus far. Most people have to go to work, and not to sound like a walking cliche, but I get to go to work. Day in and day out, I get to open my laptop and highlight special people in the world of sports – aka, my dream job.

The talent I got to watch the past few months was just that: special.

Through all of the goals, touchdowns, races, spikes, and puts, where do I even start? From Classical’s Ava Thurman racing down the soccer field, to David Brown racking up St. Mary’s touchdowns in highlight-reel fashion, to Peabody’s Isabel Bettencourt making the game of volleyball look easy, and to many, many others, the talent is legitimate.

Monday evening, we got to talk about it at Lynn City Hall. With coaches, friends, family, and other loved ones in attendance, this season’s Item All-Stars were recognized on stage for their time, commitment, and passion.

With City Council Vice President Buzzy Barton kicking things off, it was time for the first-ever Item All-Star award ceremony featuring every fall sport. After every sport’s portion, players of the year were announced: Brady Warren (golf), Sarah DiVasta (girls cross country), Nathan Lopez (boys cross country), Ella Gizmunt (volleyball), Maggie Pierce (field hockey), Ava Thurman (girls soccer), John Arruda (boys soccer), and David Brown (football).

To each and every Item All-Star, I hope you feel proud. This type of thing doesn’t just fall into your lap – you have to practice for it, rise up in big moments, and rep your school colors with pride each and every day.

Clearly, you did just that.
