LYNN — The Lynn Public Schools Jazz Ensemble performed for the Lynn Rotary Club at its annual holiday meeting last week.

The group played several holiday selections as well as some contemporary jazz pieces for a crowd of approximately 15 Rotary Club members. Three of the young musicians performed saxophone solos.

The jazz ensemble is part of the combined band for the three Lynn high schools: English, Classical, and Lynn Tech. The students’ experience levels varied, from students who had been playing their instruments since elementary school to others who started more recently in high school.

Along with the Rotary Club, the students played for Interim Superintendent of Schools Debra Ruggiero and Assistant Director of Music Curriculum Julie Carroll.

Conductor Gil Lapointe said that the students were happy to play for the Rotary Club.

“The jazz group welcomed the opportunity to play in front of a small audience, as they do not have that opportunity very often. Normally they are playing in a football stadium or a basketball court,” Lapointe said.
