The Spartans’ girls basketball team improved to 5-1 after winning the Rumble on the Ridge in Davenport, Florida on Thursday afternoon. St. Mary’s escaped the Sunshine State with a 66-26 win over Ridge Community High. Kellyn Preira had 20 points and was named Player of the Game, and Niya Morgen tacked on another 20 points.
BOYS BASKETBALL
St. Mary’s 55, McKeel Academy 23
The St. Mary’s boys basketball team won its Florida finale and rounded out its record to 2-2 with a 55-23 win over McKeel Academy. Nick Sacco punched in 18 points to lead the Spartans.
Peabody 67, Fenwick 49
The Peabody boys basketball team (2-1) defeated the Crusaders of Bishop Fenwick on Thursday 67-49. Anthony Forte put in a well-rounded performance with 24 points, six steals, and three assists, while John Lucas scored 16 points. Shea Lynch contributed a little bit of everything with 13 points, six steals, five assists, and four rebounds. For Fenwick, James Meklis continued to impress with another 30 points, while freshman Quinn Stockman tacked on eight.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
Malden 77, Classical 50
Despite the Rams’ swimming and diving team losing to Malden on Thursday, there were lots of improvements according to head coach Denise Silva. In the 200 free, both Amanda Hughes and Jayda Abreu improved their times, and in the 100 free, Jakub Polski and Marcus Ryan each cut their times as well. The 100 backstroke had Gianah Cowan swimming 10 seconds faster, and Gianna Fortes continued to improve in the 50 free. To top it all off, Classical’s first Division 1 state qualifier is senior captain Ava Anderson in women’s diving.
