Saugus defeated Revere on Thursday 67-47 to improve to 5-1 and win the David Green Memorial Basketball Tournament. The Sachems made 12 threes and received contributions from up and down the roster. Ben Tapia-Gately scored 17 points and was named tournament MVP. Chris Flynn (17 points), Josh Osawe (10 points, all-tournament team), Max Anajjar (seven points, all-tournament team), and Isaiah Rodriguez (seven points) all played well on offense.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Tech 64, KIPP 47
Despite trailing after the first quarter of the boys consolation game in the Boverini Tournament, the Tigers’ boys basketball team clawed the Panthers 64-47. Jayden Welch led the way with a double-double (18 points, 14 rebounds), while Giovanni Jean added 14 points and five assists.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Saugus 59, New Mission 50
Both Saugus basketball teams were victorious on Thursday as the girls team defeated New Mission 59-50 in the Revere Holiday Tournament. The team’s leading performers were Peyton Dibiasio (19 points), Ashleen Escobar (eight points), and Jessica Bremberg (nine points). Nine Sachems scored points, and Maddison Botta played excellent defense, making opposing guards earn every basket. Saugus takes on Milton at 2:30 p.m. in the championship on Friday.
Lynnfield 44, Gloucester 25
Earlier this month, Gloucester defeated Lynnfield’s girls basketball team 33-29. Thursday, that wasn’t the case. The Pioneers (1-4) took care of business and won their first game of the season. Concluding with a 22-point fourth quarter, Lynnfield head coach Susan Breen called the game a “hard fought match with both sides giving it their all.” Senior guard Bella George led the way with 14 points, seven rebounds, and five steals, while junior forward Jaelynn Moon recorded 11 points and seven rebounds. With adjustments made and players working hard, Breen said she’s happy for her team. Lynnfield takes on Shawsheen at home on Friday with tip-off set for 11:30 a.m.
Fenwick 49, Oliver Ames 39
At the Oliver Ames Christmas Tournament, Fenwick defeated the hosts 49-39. The Crusaders’ superstar captain Cecilia Kay had 30 points, 17 rebounds, and three blocks. Anna Fertonani, Kate McPhail, and Tess Keenan all played great defense in the win. Fenwick moved to 4-2 and travels to take on Bishop Feehan this Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
St. Mary’s 66, Reading 44
The Spartans’ girls basketball team (7-1) advanced to the Wilmington Christmas Tournament championship game with a 66-44 win over Reading on Thursday. Yirsy Queliz dropped 19 points and, alongside Niya Morgen, led the way offensively. St. Mary’s win was headlined by a 15-0 run in the second half. The Spartans take on tournament host Wilmington at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
Tech 37, KIPP 19
Up 28-4 at halftime, the Tigers defeated the Panthers 37-19 in the girls consolation game of the Boverini Tournament at Classical High. Playing well through all four quarters on Thursday, Tech moved to 3-2 on the year.
