Lynn Station heads into the new year with a bang

LYNN β€” Demolition has begun at Lynn Station, with the City of Lynn announcing work will take place from Dec. 28 through Jan. 6.

β€œThe Lynn Commuter Rail station on the Newburyport/Rockport Line is a key transportation hub for the City of Lynn and the MBTA [Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority] bus system. We are planning significant improvements to the station’s structure, safety, functionality, and accessibility. That will also reduce station maintenance costs,” the MBTA said on its webpage dedicated to the station’s improvements.

The Newburyport/Rockport line originates at Boston’s North Station and runs along the coastline, serving Chelsea, Lynn, Swampscott and Salem before branching off after Beverly Station.

The closure of the Lynn Commuter rail station on Oct. 1 marked the start of the $72 million renovation project. Bus 441/442 now serves Swampscott Station instead of Lynn Station because of the closure.

In November, MBTA Deputy Chief of Staff Angel Donahue-Rodriguez and Deputy Chief of Capital Delivery Maribel Kelly presented photographs of crumbling concrete on Lynn Station’s staircase and platform, along with an image of the station’s structurally damaged elevator at the western entrance.

β€œWe want to bring the station toward ADA compliance with two new elevators. The stairs are going to be replaced and upgraded, and a new station center, fully accessible platform, and canopy,” she said.

Demolition will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and involve saws, jackhammers, and other equipment requiring engine use.

From 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., crews will be saw-cutting the existing concrete platform to prepare for removal during the night work.

There will be no work on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, 2023, in observance of the New Year.

Lights and moderate noise levels should be expected during the work.
