PEABODY — An 18-wheeler reared-ended a car on Route 1 in Peabody at 9:26 a.m. Thursday, causing severe injuries to the driver, who was transported to a hospital.
The 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer operated by a 56-year-old man from Sun Valley, CA crashed into the 2017 Kia Sportage operated by an 86-year-old man from Middleton, MA, according to Lt. Sullivan from the State Police. The accident happened at the intersection of Route 1 southbound and Lake Street.
The 86-year-old man was later transported to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington with a serious injury, said Sullivan. According to Deputy Chief Ricard Nelson, the injured man sustained a head and back injury and was conscious and alert when taken to the hospital. The tractor-trailer operator was uninjured. The truck driver was issued a citation for failure to use care in starting and stopping.
Peabody Engine 3 was on the scene requesting Ladder 1 to respond, according to Nelson.
Vehicle damages are unknown. State Police said that the tractor-trailer would likely have taken minor injuries, saying, “A tractor-trailer rear-ending a car — really depends on the speed — but the TT will usually win.”
