The Lynn Classical girls basketball team did it again on Tuesday, defeating Somerville 62-21 in its home gym. Senior Ava Thurman led the Rams with 15 points, followed by sophomore Keisha Perez with 12. Lauren Wilson – who prevents points between the soccer pipes during the fall – chipped in with nine, while Akiyah Brown and Lauren Henessey tacked on eight apiece. Classical upped its record to 11-0 with the victory, and travels to take on Chelsea on Thursday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
English 77, Chelsea 14
In what Bulldogs’ head coach Travonne Berry-Rogers called a “great team effort all around,” English took care of business against Chelsea in blowout fashion. Jayleen Novas-Rivera had 14 points, 15 rebounds, and four steals to lead the Dogs. Amara Flores added 14 points, five rebounds, and four steals, while Jaeleigh Perry tacked on 13 points and eight rebounds. Matty Laurino chipped in with 13 points, followed by Alisha Jean who had seven points and eight boards. English stands at 7-4 after the win.
Winthrop 40, Swampscott 28
Despite a solid effort, the Big Blue didn’t play as big as Winthrop, losing 40-28 on their home court. Even though the Vikings conquered, junior Jesse Ford led Swampscott with 16 points. Swampscott hosts Saugus on Friday night in a highly-anticipated regional matchup.
Fenwick 66, Central Catholic 56
Central Catholic hung in there, but Fenwick’s girls basketball team got the job done on Tuesday, winning 66-56. For Fenwick, junior captain Cecilia Kay had 20 points and eight rebounds, continuing what’s been a stellar season for the superstar. Senior captain Erica Lendall had 19 points and four assists, while Tess Keenan, Anna Fertonani, and Kate McPhail all contributed with four assists each. The Crusaders moved to 7-4 with the win and head to Cathedral on Friday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Lynn Tech 90, Minuteman 52
Another day, another win for the Tigers – this one a 90-52 triumph over Minuteman. Junior Jayden Welch delivered with a monster double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman Giovanni Jean had 25 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Cesar Reyes added 14 points, four rebounds, and four steals. The win rounds the Tigers’ record to 8-2.
Prep 57, Xaverian 39
Tuesday’s game between rivals St. John’s Prep and Xaverian was tight in the first half, as Xaverian led by one after the first quarter, and two at halftime. But in the bottom half, the Eagles flew away from Xaverian. The final score favored the Prep 57-39 to give the Navy and White another win.
Lynn English 88, Chelsea 29
The Bulldogs advanced to 11-0 courtesy of a versatile offensive attack against Chelsea. English won with ease 88-29 as Nelson Obarisiagbon (21 points, 15 rebounds, three blocks), Josh St. Jean (22 points, 15 rebounds), Warren Keel Jr. (19 points, five assists), and Tyrese Melo García (14 points, seven assists, six rebounds) all submitted strong performances.
Somerville 63, Classical 55
Coming off its win against Swampscott earlier in the week, Classical was defeated on the road in a tight matchup with Somerville.
Winthrop 60, Swampscott 57
The Big Blue had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, but failed to close against Winthrop. Swampscott had one last chance to send the game to overtime, but a three-pointer rimmed out. Max Brodsky had 18 points, while freshman Connor Chiarello and Riad Benagour each put up 10. Liam Wales added eight, and Swampscott’s next game is against Saugus later in the week.
TRACK AND FIELD
St. Mary’s 63, Fenwick 23 (boys)
The Spartans moved to 4-0 on the season with a 63-23 win over the Crusaders of Bishop Fenwick. First place finishers included Brett O’Brien (long jump, 19’1”; high jump, 6’1”), Kyle Kwiatek – who broke a school record in the 1,000-meter with a time of 2:44.2 – Jesse Moriello (600-m, 1:36.54), and Nick Fusco (2-mile, 13:07.79).
Fenwick 60, St. Mary’s 31 (girls)
St. Mary’s fell to a tough Bishop Fenwick team on the girls side, 60-31. Despite the loss, it didn’t come without positives. Strong performances came from Kaelyn Jennings (55-m hurdles, 10.33), Lory Suriel (shot put, 35’), Kelsey Kwiatek (mile, 5:53.29), and Tatum Cahill (600-m, 2:02.07).
SWIMMING AND DIVING
Fenwick 95, Arlington Catholic 64
The Crusaders traveled to Medford on Tuesday for a meet against Arlington Catholic, and won 10 of 11 events. First place finishes came from Meredith Yuhasz (200 free; 100 butterfly), Audrey Waldinger (200 IM; 100 backstroke), Caroline Blatchford (50 free; 500 free), and Hannah Ryan (100 breaststroke). In the 400 free relay, Blatchford, Waldinger, Ryan, and Yuhasz also finished first, as well as Madi Moseley, Waldinger, senior captain Hannah English, and Yuhasz in the 200 free relay. And in the 200 medley relay, Blatchford, Moseley, Charles Kurti, and Matt McDonald were second to none as well.
