Did you know seagulls don’t exist? This is what Henry Mauer of Harpswell, Maine said while he was birding at King’s Beach Thursday.
Henry and his wife Deb Mauer were at King’s Beach along with a group of bird watchers with binoculars, spotting scopes and cameras hoping to see a common gull. The common gull is typically only found in Europe but was seen by birder Suzanne Sullivan recently at King’s Beach according to Henry Mauer.
The three species of gulls usually found at King’s Beach are the ring-billed gull, the herring gull and the great black-backed gull.
The common gull was seen on Wednesday and Deb Mauer said someone saw it Thursday morning.
The Mauer’s have been birding for 20 or 30 years, they said.
“Sometimes you just see an amazing bird that has a really cool name or it has really great colors,” Deb Mauer said. “There’s great birding in Eastern Massachusetts.”
