Like clockwork for Classical girls hoops

January 19, 2023 by Joey Barrett

Not a week goes by where Lynn Classical’s girls basketball team doesn’t win, literally. On Thursday, the Rams defeated Chelsea 48-17. Savannah Tang led everyone with 10 points, while junior Kaleigh Bullock and sophomore Nevaeh Eth each contributed with six points apiece. The Rams moved to 12-0 with the victory, and face a tough test on Tuesday when they travel to face Revere.

English 65, Malden 26

English had a task to defend its home gym on Thursday – mission accomplished. The Bulldogs advanced to 8-4 with the victory, and head coach Travonne Berry-Rogers said there was “good second half defensive pressure.” Jari Perez showed out with 23 points and three rebounds, while Matty Laurino continued her stellar play with 16 points and six rebounds. Jayleen Novas-Rivera scored nine to go along with 15 rebounds, and Jaeleigh Perry tacked on nine and 10 boards.

Lynnfield 36, Amesbury 26

Classical’s not the only team that’s red hot – add the Pioneers to that list. Lynnfield defeated Amesbury in enemy territory 36-26, and star Bella George impressed again with 20 points. Izzy Levasseur led the opposition with seven points.

Marblehead 43, Essex Tech 30

Marblehead coach Paul Moran said he had a lot of contributors on Thursday, as his team ran away with a 43-30 victory over Essex Tech. According to Moran, Kate Burns played her “best game of the year” with eight points and five rebounds, while Carlin McGowan added another 10. Tessa Andriano scored nine points, and Samantha Dormer added six. Moran also said Stella Monaco played great off the bench.

BOYS BASKETBALL

English 72, Malden 38

The Bulldogs ran through another opponent on Thursday – this time it was Malden in the way. English won 72-38 with sharpshooter Tyrese Melo García showing off with 32 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. Denzell Guillén followed with 17 points and five helpers, while Josh St. Jean put up another double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds).

Classical 46, Chelsea 45

In “a game of runs” as said by Classical head coach Marvin Avery, Classical let a 15-point lead slide against Chelsea, but came out on top in the end 46-45. Freshman guard Marvin Avery Jr. led the Rams with 24 points, while center Davonte Taggart did his thing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Green and Gold return to action Tuesday against Revere.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Marblehead 87, Salem 51

Marblehead had a home meet against Salem on Thursday, and swam away victorious. Head coach Susan Guertin said the team had “a few people very, very close to qualifying for state championships,” and that it was a good meet overall.

English 86, Classical 70

In an exciting meet featuring several great finishes, the Bulldogs took care of the Rams on Thursday. For Classical, captain Camille Mendonca finished first in the 50 free, while fellow captain Ava Anderson finished first in diving. The 100 fly was won by Andrew Moore, and the 100 free by Mendonca. The 200 free relay was won by Jakub Polski, Gianna Fortes, Marcus Ryan, and Amanda Hughes. Also, the 100 backstroke had the Rams finishing 2-3-4 with Anderson, Alex Moya and Gianna Cowen impressing. Classical and English both swim at Medford next Thursday at the GBL Championships.
