KIPP girls basketball head coach Tiphani Harris is happy with her team’s progression, despite its 50-35 loss to the Fellowship Christian Academy on Friday. “We had another strong team effort and we continue to play better basketball,” Harris said. “Our goal is just to play basketball, enjoy it and learn how to work hard – no matter what happens on the scoreboard.” Katrina Fortes had a great game and was aggressive on both sides of the ball according to Harris.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Marblehead 35, Beverly 26

The Magicians avenged an earlier season loss to the Panthers on the road, and were led by junior Sam Dormer (10 points). The Marblehead duo of Katie Pyne (eight points) and Katie Burns (six points and 10 rebounds) had strong showings as well. Carlin McGowan (two points and three rebounds) was a spark off the bench for the Magicians.

St. Mary’s 68, Arlington Catholic 17

St. Mary’s senior Kellyn Preira had a memorable performance, as she scored a career-high 31 points. St. Mary’s received big contributions from its younger players in Jillian Roberts (five points and seven rebounds), Lily Norton (five points and five assists) and Brooke Mahoney (four points and five steals). The Spartans have improved their record to 13-1.

Cathedral 67, Fenwick 40

The Crusaders were down big early, and could never get back into the game. Fenwick junior Cecilia Kay had a strong performance in the loss, as she recorded a double-double (20 points and 12 rebounds). Fenwick’s record is now 7-5, and will look to bounce back next Wednesday at Peabody.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Saugus 59, Swampscott 50

The Sachems trailed 37-36 heading into the fourth quarter, but seized control as they outscored Swampscott 23-13 in the final frame. Leading the way for the Sachems was the trio of Ben Tapia-Gately, Isaiah Rodriguez and Josh Osawe, as they scored 15 points each. Chris Flynn and Max Anajjar also added seven points apiece for Saugus as the Sachems improved their record to 9-3.

Cathedral 64, Fenwick 55

Fenwick lost a tight contest at home against Cathedral. James Meklis led the Crusaders, as he scored a team-high 17 points. John Kennedy (six points and five rebounds) and Jimmy Vahey (eight points) had solid performances for Fenwick as well.

Peabody 61, Masco 38

The Tanners led the Chieftains 30-14 at the end of the first half and never looked back. AJ Forte had a monster performance for Peabody, scoring a game-high 27 points alongside six steals.

North Reading 50, Lynnfield 49

Lynnfield led 49-47 with less than 30 seconds remaining, but North Reading drilled a three-pointer with four seconds left – the eventual game-winner. The Pioneers received two impressive performances from Gavin Deluties and Cam Marengi, as they each scored 17 points. Lynnfield’s record is now 7-4, and the Pioneers look to get back to their winning ways next Tuesday against Manchester Essex.

GIRLS HOCKEY

PLNR 4, Masco 1

Masco tied the score 1-1 early in the second period, but PLNR responded, scoring three unanswered goals from that point on. Jenna DiNapoli scored the game-winner at the 8:30 mark, assisted by Leah Buckley. PLNR added two goals in the final period, one by Angela Fabbo (assisted by Buckley and Daniella White) and the other by Catie Kampresal (assisted by White and Vanessa Steinmeyer).
