SAUGUS — The town’s police force officially gained a new member Monday afternoon.

At a brief ceremony inside Town Hall, Tyler DiFlumeri was sworn in as a member of the Saugus Police Department by Town Manager Scott Crabtree as members of his family and the town’s public safety departments, including Police Chief Michael Ricciardelli, looked on. DiFlumeri graduated from the academy on Jan. 17.

Before administering the oath to DiFlumeri, Crabtree, himself a former police officer, said swearing in new police officers and firefighters is one of his favorite parts of the job.

“This is always something I enjoy as town manager, being able to hire people in public safety and… add to the positive things here in Saugus,” he said.

“We’re really looking forward to big things from you,” Crabtree told DiFlumeri.

Ricciardelli also offered brief remarks, praising the newest member of his department for his “high character” despite his youth and lack of work experience.

“You can’t teach that,” Ricciardelli said. “As long as you have a high character, [and] want to work hard, we’ll work with you.”

Though DiFlumeri is still new to the force, he’s gotten an inside look at public safety in Saugus by way of his father, Robert, a firefighter. Born and raised in Saugus, DiFlumeri said he has long wanted to serve the community he grew up in.

“I love it, wouldn’t trade it for anything,” he said in a brief interview following the swearing-in. “I want to do my part to make the town better.”
