The Tigers are hungry

LYNN — Lynn Tech is off to a great start with a record of 8-2 alongside a five-game winning streak. The Tigers are undefeated in their conference, and the season is looking bright.

However, it was actually the two games the Tigers lost that head coach Corey Bingham says happened at the perfect time. Against Essex Tech (game number two), Bingham described the loss as a “wake-up call.”

“The loss got us prepped and ready for the next couple of games,” Bingham said.

After the loss to Essex Tech, the Tigers went on to beat Mystic Valley (68-57) and Saugus (62-61). The Tigers then lost a close game to Classical (50-44) in the holiday tournament, but since then, have yet to lose.

“[Essex Tech] turned a page for us. It was a different type of environment. The guys got something out of the game and we’ve been steamrolling since,” Bingham said.

When asked what he likes so far, Bingham said “I love the hunger in the team.”

“Every challenge put to them, they’re willing to take it head-on,” Bingham said.

At the start of the season, Bingham wanted his team’s focal point to be defense. That said, out of a 10-point scale, he gives his team a 7.5 thus far.

“As a coach, you’re never satisfied. There’s always room for improvement but I love what we’re doing,” Bingham said. “We’re more aggressive. There’s no more walking to the ball – we want the ball now.”

Bingham believes his team is having fun this season, something he encourages often. During practices, you can hear players and coaches joking around with music coming from the gym.

“Everyone has jokes nowadays. It’s good to keep the atmosphere fun. You don’t want to be tense all the time,” Bingham said.

The Tigers are hoping their defense can help them win their conference – a goal Bingham has set for his team.

“We’re right where we’re supposed to be,” Bingham said. “The first task is to win the conference, then get into the tournament and win the first game. After that, anything can happen.”

Tech’s next game is on Thursday at Pioneer Charter with tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m.
