The St. John’s Prep hockey team moved to 10-1-1 and defended their home-rink with a 9-2 thrashing of St. John’s on Saturday afternoon. Jimmy Ayers (two shorthanded goals) and Christian Rosa each scored twice. That said, perhaps the most impressive statistic from the victory: 14 Prep skaters went home with at least one point.
BOYS HOCKEY
Greater Lowell 5, Lynn 1
The Jets fought hard on Saturday – and were only down 2-1 with six minutes remaining in the game – but fell 5-2 at the hands of Greater Lowell. AJ Lopez scored Lynn’s goal, and Brian Boisson dished out the assist as the Jets fell to 2-13 this season.
Lynnfield 5, Newburyport 4
It’s a good weekend when you become a back-to-back Cape Ann League champion – that’s what the Lynnfield hockey team did on Saturday with a 5-4 win over the Clippers. Joe Raffa, Jack Carpenter, Jarett Scoppetuolo, and Will Norton were the goal-scorers, as Scoppetuolo’s goal was the one that ended it. Drew Damiani and Lucas Cook caught eyes with two assists apiece.
Arlington Catholic 2, St. Mary’s 1
The Spartans lost again on Saturday – this time at the hands of Arlington Catholic – but still stand at 9-2-4 overall. Jack Hall scored the lone goal for St. Mary’s.
Andover 5, Fenwick 2
A few Crusaders impressed on Saturday – especially Manny Alvarez-Segee who scored a power play goal in the first period, and an even-strength goal in the second – but that was all of the Fenwick scoring. Andover tucked five, worsening the Crusaders’ record to 4-9 this season.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Masco 3, Marblehead 2
Marblehead fought hard on Saturday night, but fell to Masco 3-2 in a tight matchup. Despite the loss, things are still looking up. Marblehead won two games earlier this month, and scored three goals over its last two games.
PLNR 2, Beverly 1
Against Beverly at Endicott College, PLNR continued its stellar season with a 2-1 victory over the Panthers. Vanessa Steinmeyer scored off an assist from Penny Spack, then Spack won the game in the third period – assisted by Angela Fabbo. Just one shot got past PLNR goalie Alyse Mutti who impressed with several key saves.
Archbishop Williams 3, St. Mary’s 2
Abbie Poole and Jenna Chaplain each scored for the Spartans against a tough Archbishop Williams team, and were 26 seconds away from yet another victory. However, Archbishop Williams tied the game late and won in overtime, handing the Spartans their first loss of the season (13-1).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lincoln-Sudbury 53, Peabody 42
In another rarity this week, the Tanners were downed on Sunday afternoon, losing to Lincoln-Sudbury 53-42. Peabody was led by Lauryn Mendonca with 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Abby Bettencourt added 12 points, nine rebounds, and an impressive six steals. Logan Lomasney contributed with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Tech 60, Greater Lawrence 36
Go, Tigers, go. In the Tech girls basketball team’s dominating victory on Saturday, Engelyz Bingham had 26 points, seven steals and four rebounds, while Aliyah Volquez had 12 points, three steals and two assists. Divine Egbuta also had eight points, 12 rebounds and four steals, and Amie Diaz had six points, four steals and three assists. The Tigers jumped to 9-3 with the win.
TRACK AND FIELD
At the MSTCA Coaches Invitational, the St. Mary’s Spartans put on a show. In a meet that’s considered the individual championship in the MSTCA, Ernie Panias finished first in the 55 meters with a personal best time of 6.67 – breaking his own school record. Freshman Justin Jennings finished 22nd with a 7.02, the highest-finishing freshman in the entire meet. Kyle Kwiatek took ninth in the mile with a personal best of 4:36.77 – also breaking his own school record. Also, Brett O’Brien set a new school record with a 37.87 in the 300 meter, good for 22nd. Dylan Moroney submitted a 19’10” in long jump, earning seventh place, and as the lone female representative, Lory Suriel had a 34’9.75” in shot put to give her fifth place. “Today was a huge day. I could not be prouder of them across the board,” St. Mary’s head coach Tristan Smith said. “This bodes very well going into the later, competitive meets over the rest of the season.”
SWIMMING AND DIVING
Fenwick 91, St. Mary’s 64
Fenwick held its last dual meet of the season and went head-to-head with St. Mary’s. Fenwick won 91-64, finishing the season undefeated in the Catholic Central League North – also placing first in eight of 11 events. Senior captain Audrey Waldinger, sophomore Hannah Ryan, senior captain Hannah English, and senior captain Meredith Yuhasz performed the 200 medley relay in 2:01.93. Other swimmers who impressed, individually, were English (200 free, 2:19.44), Yuhasz (200 IM, 2:22.52; 500 free, 5:52.31), Waldinger (100 butterfly, 1:07.72), and Caroline Blatchford (100 backstroke, 107.81).
