St. John’s Prep wrestling is tough to beat

Joey Barrett

February 1, 2023 by Joey Barrett

The Prep wrestling team defeated Catholic Memorial 72-6 on Wednesday, checking a few things off in the process. The Eagles have now won 25 consecutive Catholic Conference titles and 114 straight matches in the conference. They’re also 32-1 overall this season and 5-0 in the CC. Wednesday’s winners were Ben Schumacher, Alex Schaeublin, Braedon Goes, Elias Hajali, Jimmy Lally, Jayden D’Ambrosio, Ryan DeSouza, Ryan Lepore, Rawson Iwanicki, Vince Bilotti, Rani Haddad, Marc Pineiro, and Alex Bajoras.

TRACK AND FIELD

Lynn Tech track and field defeated Lowell Catholic on Wednesday, and head coach James Runner couldn’t have been happier. “I’m just really proud of the Lynn Tech track team,” Runner said. “We’ve earned the right to compete for the conference [next] Wednesday at Lynn Tech.” In what’s been a stellar season for the program, the boys are 5-1 while the girls are a perfect 6-0.

BOYS HOCKEY

Marblehead 4, Masco 3

The Headers continued their strong season on Wednesday, besting Masco 4-3 on their home ice. Marblehead was trailing after the first and second periods, but none of that mattered. The Headers scored three in the third to escape victorious, and take on Winthrop this Saturday.

St. John’s Prep 6, Malden Catholic 3

The Prep hockey team dominated again – this time against Malden Catholic 6-3. Ahead 5-0 after two periods, the Eagles let Malden Catholic get back in the game, but Harlan Graber’s third period strike gave Prep the road victory.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Fenwick 3, Arlington Catholic 0

Penny Levine-Stein, Abbey Millman, and Ali Sprissler scored the Crusaders’ goals in Fenwick’s 3-0 victory over Arlington Catholic in enemy territory. Ella Tucker stood tall between the pipes with a shutout, and Fenwick returns to the ice Saturday against Auburn.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Saugus 78, KIPP 76

The Sachems and Panthers went toe-to-toe on Wednesday in an overtime thriller, but Saugus went home a winner 78-76 to improve to 11-4. Talk about some offensive explosions – Ben Tapia-Gately (30 points), Josh Osawe (21 points), and Isaiah Rodriguez (17 points) all shined for Saugus.
