The Marblehead girls hockey team struck first against Medford, which propelled the Lady Headers to a 2-1 victory at Connery Rink Monday night. Marblehead coach Brittany Smith was excited about her team’s effort against Medford. “The girls played a really good game and did a lot of great things,” Smith said. “They made a lot of good passes, regrouped well on the defensive end in transition, and just played a really smart game. I was also pleased to see how well they held their composure tonight, as the game did get a little chippy. I am just proud of the way they played tonight.” The Lady Headers scored all their goals in the first, as Ava Shultz lit the lamp at the 11:30 mark (assisted by Neelie Payne) and Maddie Graber scored at the 3:34 mark (assisted by Teyah Fleming). The Magicians surrendered Medford’s lone goal on a penalty shot midway through the third. Melanie Earl also had a strong showing for the Magicians, and Marblehead (4-11) will next take on Winthrop on Wednesday.

BOYS HOCKEY

Swampscott 8, Minutemen 0

Swampscott raced out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period and never looked back. Leading the way for the Bug Blue was the trio of Ronan Locke (two goals and two assists), Quinn Hitchcock (two goals and one assist), and Derek Faia (two goals and one assist). Swampscott freshman Jason Rothwell and sophomore Joey Pilotte each scored their first career varsity goals – completing a night they’ll never forget. Jason Bouffard also recorded a shutout in net for the Big Blue. Swampscott improved its record to 10-4 and will next take on Marblehead at Salem State on Wednesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
