Every athlete’s dream on the basketball court

Joey Barrett

February 7, 2023 by Joey Barrett

Ipswich jumped ahead of Lynnfield’s girls basketball team 41-39 with 1:23 remaining on Tuesday. That said, the Pioneers’ Jaelynn Moon hit a shot with three seconds remaining to tie things up – and it didn’t end there. Bella George stole the inbound pass and got the ball to Ava Gamache who hit the game-winning shot as time expired to give Lynnfield the 43-41 win.

“It was a hard fought game with an incredible finish,” Lynnfield head coach Susan Breen said.

After beginning the season with a few losses, that all seems like ancient history for the red-hot Pioneers who now stand at 8-9. George had 11 points, Moon put up eight, and Gamache tacked on seven. Erika Pasquale also contributed with six points.

“We had really balanced scoring,” Breen said.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Innovation 48
Lynn Tech 44

Innovation clinched its spot in the postseason with a narrow four-point win over the Tigers on Tuesday. That said, there were lots of positives to take away for Tech. The do-it-all-Tiger Engelyz Bingham had 24 points, three blocks, and two steals. Divine Egbuta had 10 points, 14 rebounds, and four steals as Tech’s record dropped to 10-6.

Peabody 63
Marblehead 44

Despite a 64-46 final score that favored Peabody, Marblehead coach Paul Moran said “I thought we had one of our better games of the year.” Marblehead was down just six at halftime, but the Tanners dominated the second half to find victory. “Unfortunately in the second half, I made some bad adjustments – so that falls on me,” Moran said. Tessa Andriano led Marblehead with 19 points, and Moran called her “by far our most consistent player.” Logan Lomasney led Peabody with 20 points and 13 rebounds as Peabody moved to 13-2.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Lynnfield 54
Ipswich 33

The Pioneers improved to 11-6 on the season with a 54-33 triumph over Ipswich on Tuesday. Lynnfield star Alex Gentile led all scorers with 13 points, while Gavin Deluties (10) and Cam Marengi (nine) followed. Marengi scored all of his points from downtown.

Tech 65
Innovation 55

It’s a good start to the week when you win by double-digits and move to 14-3 overall (9-1 in conference). Tech guard Andy Batista did it all with 21 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while Jayden Welch put up a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Cesar Reyes also chipped in with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Saugus 65
Gloucester 58

The Sachems reeled in the Fishermen on Tuesday, winning 65-58 on their home floor. Not only that, Saugus improved to 12-5 on the season and 7-4 in the Northeastern Conference. Ben Tapia-Gately (24 points), Chris Flynn (19), and Max Anajjar (15) all had the hot-hand in an explosive night on offense for the Sachems. Saugus will battle Danvers on Thursday.

KIPP 72
Greater Lawrence 57

The KIPP Panthers looked to hunt down Greater Lawrence on Tuesday, and did just that with a 15-point victory. The victory snapped a two-game skid for KIPP, and the Panthers return to action Friday at Shawsheen (7 p.m.).

Worcester North 69
St. Mary’s 60

Despite the Spartans’ David Brown scoring 21 points, and JJ Martinez following with 12, St. Mary’s was bested by high school powerhouse Worcester North on the road. St. Mary’s returns home on Thursday against Burke with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
