In a Saturday matinee at Lynn Tech, the St. Mary’s boys basketball team advanced to the Spartan Classic championship game (Monday) with an 80-62 victory over a tough Springfield Central team. Anthony D’Itria (21 points) and JJ Martinez each impressed for St. Mary’s.

Despite a hard-fought effort, Classical was bested in the Spartan Classic by Lincoln-Sudbury on Saturday at St. Mary’s High. Almani Gerardo led the way for the Rams with 20 points. “It wasn’t aggressive like I was expecting… tomorrow (Monday’s game vs. Swampscott) is a new day,” head coach Marvin Avery said.

Despite the 23-point loss, there were plenty of positives to take away for Swampscott. Max Brodsky led the Big Blue with 18 points, followed by Liam Wales (12) and Andrew Templeman (12). Swampscott got to within three in the third quarter, but Lowell Catholic ran away as the Big Blue struggled to score from that point on.

Senior Nate Montagnino poured in 26 points to lead the Fishermen over the Crusaders in the first round of the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic at Marblehead High School. Senior guards Adam Borowick (12) and Ashton Davis (10) combined for 22 points for Gloucester, which will face Marblehead in the championship game Monday at 6 p.m. Junior James Meklis led Fenwick with 17 points.

The Magicians will have a chance to defend the title they won last year after outlasting a tough group of Buccaneers in the first round of the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic. Tyrone Countrymon led Marblehead with 26 points, while Ryan Commoss scored 16 and Nicholas Lemmond added 16. Bedford’s Justice Buchanan led all scorers with 40 points.

Senior guard Hannah Martin exploded for 37 points to lead the Scarlet Knights in the first round of the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic. Martin hit four 3-pointers and went 9-10 from the free-throw line. Cecilia Kay (13), Anna Fertonani (9) and Celia Neilson (8) combined for 30 points for the Crusaders. North Andover will take on Masconomet in the championship game Monday at 4:15 p.m.

The third time was the charm for the Chieftains, who had lost to the Tanners twice this season. Masco took a 9-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Mia Theberge led the Chieftains with 17 points, while Kaleigh Monagle added 13 and Taylor Bovardi had 10. Logan Lomasney had a game-high 18 points for the Tanners, who will play Bishop Fenwick in the consolation game Monday at 1 p.m.

There’s one thing about the Pioneers – they never quit. Despite being down 26-15 at halftime, Lynnfield made some adjustments and got easy transition points to reduce the deficit to four heading into the fourth quarter. Lynnfield outscored Melrose 14-6 in the fourth with senior Isabella George and Jaelynn Moon each scoring seven apiece in the final eight minutes. It was a total team effort as George finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Moon secured another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in addition to four steals and three assists.

Despite never quitting and playing until the final whistle, the Lynn English girls basketball team was defeated by Acton-Boxboro 60-29 Sunday afternoon at St. Mary’s.

Down 1-0? No problem for the St. Mary’s boys hockey team. The Spartans’ Nick Thornton tied the game before Luke Bott found the back of the net in overtime to lead St. Mary’s to a 2-1 win against Fenwick on Saturday.

Despite assistant captain Matthew Cote finding the back of the net, and superstar goalie Stephen Difilippo making headlines with 60 – yes, 60 – saves, the Lynn Jets were defeated by Pentucket 7-1. The Jets return to action in their final game of the season Monday at Warrior Arena against St. Joseph’s Prep.

After losing to Hopkinton 5-4 in its first loss of the season, Lynnfield returned with vengeance against Hudson in the Martha’s Vineyard Tournament. Drew Damiani led the way with two goals and two assists, while Ryan MacEachern scored his first varsity goal – a moment he’ll never forget.

Abbie Poole, Jenna Chaplain, and Gabbi Oakes scored the St. Mary’s goals as the Spartans continued to run their way through the competition. St. Mary’s moved to 18-1 with the victory and takes on Billerica/Chelmsford Monday at Connery Rink (10 a.m.).

There were not one, not two, not three, but four goal-scorers for Bishop Fenwick’s girls hockey team on Saturday against Weymouth. Penny Levine-Stein, Molly Sullivan, Mya Jewell, and Abbey Millman all scored, and Ali Sprissler tacked on an assist.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Fenwick girls team traveled to MIT for the Division I state championship Saturday, placing 10th out of 35 teams. Senior captain Meredith Yuhasz swam to impress after missing both the CCL conference championships and sectionals due to illness. She was Fenwick’s top scorer, placing third in the 200-free (1:57.43) and second in the 500-free (5:11.82). In the 200-free relay, the team of senior captain Hannah English, sophomore Hannah Ryan, senior captain Audrey Waldinger, and freshman Caroline Blatchford took eighth overall with a time of 1:45.5.
St. Mary’s Isabella Morillo also impressed at the MIAA state championships with two personal bests. In the 50-free, she finished with a 26.48. “Way to go Isabella Morillo,” head coach Michele Brewster said.
TRACK AND FIELD
In the varsity state sectionals, the Peabody girls finished third while the boys took home 11th place. Nine Tanners and two relay teams will be heading to All-States (six girls events and three boys). Senior Brianna Ewansiha (high jump, 5’4) and sophomore Alex Jackson (shot put, 54 -7.25) are Division II champions, while Aaliyah Callahan, Savanna Vargas, Sarah DiVasta, Lindsey Wilson, Justin Franco, Marissa Simmons, Yosemery Batista, Tamara Kemishia, Kyra Buckley, Sofia Schirripia, and Madi Barrett all impressed with podium finishes in their respective events.
