Springfield Central 61
Coming off its first loss of the season (Saturday against Malden Catholic), the Lynn English boys basketball team faced another challenge Monday afternoon against Springfield Central in a Spartan Classic consolation game. The Bulldogs needed a come-from-behind effort, but defeated the Golden Eagles 66-61.
English head coach Alvin Abreu was proud of his team’s showing during this tournament.
“I think having to face adversity is going to be a good thing for this group, especially with the state tournament about to start,” Abreu said. “We started a bit slow today, but the kids showed great resilience today which is very important and encouraging to see.”
English trailed 17-7 at the end of the first quarter, but cut into the deficit in the second as it trailed just 31-30 at the end of the first half.
The Bulldogs held a slim three-point lead with less than one minute remaining in the fourth, but English’s Warren Keel Jr. put the game away at the free throw line with four consecutive free throws.
Tyrese Melo-Garcia – who made the all-tournament team – put together an amazing performance, finishing with a game-high 35 points and five rebounds for the Bulldogs.
“Tyrese came up huge for us today,” Abreu said.
Keel finished the game with a double-double (16 points and 10 assists) and Joshua Anderson controlled the paint for the Bulldogs (seven points and 10 rebounds). English (18-1) finishes its season against inner-city rival St. Mary’s Wednesday (7 p.m.).

Despite the 17-point victory, Fenwick head coach Adam DeBaggis remains never satisfied.
