The St. Mary’s girls hockey team competed in the Hingham Showcase on Tuesday and shut out Malden Catholic 4-0. Maggie Pierce (2), Amanda Forziati, and Kelly Lovett all scored for the Spartans.
“We were able to capitalize on our power play opportunities,” St. Mary’s head coach Frank Pagliuca said. “Maggie Pierce played great… I know she scored two goals, but she did a lot of things well.”
As if you didn’t already know her name, goalie Ang Catino caught eyes with another shutout – her 13th of the season.
“She’s been overlooked a lot… played with a lot of confidence,” Pagliuca said. “Ang has to step up and make some big saves for us.”
St. Mary’s continues its Hingham Showcase run on Thursday against Notre Dame at the Pilgrim Arena.
“You get to play some really good teams going into the [state] tournament,” Pagliuca said. “We’re looking forward to it.”
BOYS HOCKEY
St. Mary’s 4
Central Catholic 0
St. Mary’s head coach Mark Lee called the Pope Francis Tournament “one of the premier tournaments in the state.” That said, a 4-0 win isn’t easy, but that’s what the Spartans did on Tuesday against Central Catholic.
Brady Bullock scored twice to lead the way, while Marc Hilton and Benjamin Fry also found the back of the net. Lee credited his team’s complete game, adding that it led to offensive opportunities.
“We played three zones today,” Lee said. “It opened up a lot of the offense.”
St. Mary’s goalie Anthony Palmer, once again, did his thing with 21 saves.
“It all starts with him,” Lee said.
On top of the stellar goaltending and timely finishes, Lee applauded his upperclassmen as the Spartans have a very young roster.
“The senior leadership was really good,” Lee said. “These guys stepped up.”
Triton 2
Marblehead 1
The Headers took the ice in their regular season finale on Tuesday, but fell short against Triton 2-1 in Newburyport. Despite the final score, Marblehead never quit.
Down 2-0 in the third period, Marblehead’s Connor Sheridan scored to cut the lead in half – assisted by Drake Wyman and Cam Waldman. And even though two got by him, Griffin Winter of the Headers stood strong between the pipes with 26 saves.
Marblehead’s Christopher Locke and Hogan Sedky recently made the Northeastern Conference All-League teams, while James Caeran and Kyle Hart were selected as All-Stars.
