The St. Mary’s swim team finished second in the Central Catholic League (CCL) this season with a record of 3-2. There was a lot to like from its group of swimmers, but head coach Michele Brewster admired her team’s growth more than anything.
“That’s one of my goals. I love seeing kids grow with swimming,” Brewster said. “Just to see how they started at the beginning of the season and seeing their growth through the year.”
When asked if there was any meet that stood out to Brewster, she responded with the CCL championship.
“The kids did exceptionally well, a lot of them got their personal best [time],” Brewster said. “It was a lot of fun; it was at UMass Dartmouth and the kids did really well.”
Dylan Obayashi placed first at the CCL championship in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.30. Isabella Morillo finished second in the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 26.75, while Travis Smith finished ninth and set a personal record with a time of 28.75.
There have been consistent performers all year long for the Spartans, especially in relays – some of their best events.
“Our 200 freestyle relay and our 200 IM relay did exceptionally well all season,” Brewster said.
The relay team consisted of Dylan Aubatche, Isabella Morillo, Travis Smith, and Luka Kukolj.
Morillo, while only a sophomore, qualified for sectionals and states this season.
“Isabella did phenomenal this year. She came first or second throughout the season,” Brewster said. “In any event that she swims, she always puts 100 percent into it… she works very hard and is a great kid.”
At sectionals, Morillo finished 15th overall in the 200 IM and 24th in the 100 backstroke. The following week, she competed in the state championship at MIT where she posted two personal bests. One of them came in the 50 freestyle where Morillo posted an impressive 26.48.
Despite finishing second in the league this year, the Spartans are graduating just three seniors. That said, look for the Spartans to be primed for a run at the CCL title next season.
