The No. 36 Lynn Classical girls basketball team went up against No. 29 Algonquin in the first round of Division I play on Monday, but was bested on the road 58-51.
Despite the loss, senior Ava Thurman finished her career in style – and doing what she does best. She scored 21 points, followed by Lauren Hennessey (14) and Akiyah Brown (7) in the category.
Getting off to a good start is a goal of every basketball team. Unfortunately for the Rams, they went down by double-digits early and fell into a 13-6 hole after the first quarter.
They never quit, however, and didn’t let things get out of hand. Classical faced a 23-15 hole at halftime.
Fast forward to the fourth quarter, and the ever-so-gritty Rams cut the lead to 40-35 with just under six minutes remaining. That said, Algonquin rallied late – extending the lead to double digits at one point – and Classical’s undefeated season was no longer.
“After a slow start that put us in a hole early, they [Rams] played with tremendous intensity to battle back to within four in the fourth quarter,” Classical head coach Tom Sawyer said.
Despite the loss, Classical finished the season 20-1, and Sawyer walked out of the gym with his head held high.
“[I’m] very proud of this team as they competed until the end,” Sawyer said.
The Titans moved on and play at Wachusett this Thursday at 6 p.m.
