The St. John’s Prep boys hockey team defeated Lexington 11-0 in the first round of the Division I tournament, dominating play right from the opening faceoff. The Eagles outshot Lexington 63-6 overall, and had a balanced scoring attack with eight different players lighting the lamp.
Junior Jake Vana and senior Will Van Sicklin scored two goals apiece for St. John’s Prep, and senior forward Matt Kirby scored his first career goal for the Eagles off a rebound. No.1 St. John’s Prep will host No.16 Archbishop Williams in a Sweet 16 matchup this Saturday at 6:40 p.m.

Brady Bullock and Cam McGonagle scored the St. Mary’s goals – alongside another Anthony Palmer shutout – as the Spartans earned a hard-fought win in round one.

Cohasset 3
Swampscott 2
The Big Blue trailed 2-0 heading into the third period, but never quit and scored two goals in the final frame. Swampscott junior forward Kody Langeravin scored at the 13:52 mark and fellow junior forward Will Roddy tied the game 2-2 five minutes later – both goals were assisted by senior forward Ronan Locke. It took double-overtime to decide, but Swampscott found itself on the losing end of a great game. Junior Jason Bouffard recorded 22 saves in goal for the Big Blue nonetheless.
“Just really proud of the team, the way they battled back to tie the game and force OT,” Swampscott head coach Gino Faia said. “They showed no quit as they did all year.”
GIRLS HOCKEY
Fenwick 2
Plymouth 1
For a second straight year, the Fenwick and Plymouth girls hockey teams needed an extra session for an encounter to be decided. At the 8:26 mark of overtime, Fenwick was on the penalty kill but Abbey Millman stole the puck and finished with a breakaway goal to give the Crusaders the win. Penny Levine-Stein scored the first Fenwick goal, assisted by Ali Sprissler. No. 17 Fenwick is now in the Division I Sweet 16 and will travel to take on No.2 St. Mary’s.
Haverhill 5
Marblehead 0
The Magicians were tied 0-0 at the end of the first period, but were haunted by penalties in the second period – one in which they went down 3-0 after. Nevertheless, Marblehead coach Brittany Smith was proud of her team after the game.
“The girls kept fighting until the final whistle, and I give them a lot of props for being able to do that,” Smith said.
The senior duo of Sophie Zerilli and Riley Campbell had strong defensive performances for the Magicians. Sophomore forward Neelie Payne, freshman goalie Addie Lydon, and fellow eighth grade goalie Liv Doucette all had nice showings for Marblehead.
