Talk about a versatile offensive attack – the Lynnfield boys hockey team saw four goal-scorers on Saturday in its 5-2 win against No. 15 Methuen. With the home victory, the No. 2 Pioneers are on to the Elite 8 to face Triton (Wednesday, 8 p.m.).
Lucas Cook led the way with two goals – the first a snipe as he walked down the right side of the ice – followed by Jack Carpenter, Dylan Damiani, and Jarett Scoppettuolo who all scored.
Lynnfield did its thing in unselfish fashion (six players recording assists) and on defense, Dan McSweeney recorded 19 saves. The senior has shown off an impressive 1.68 goals allowed average this season, and he’s not done yet.
BOYS HOCKEY
St. John’s Prep 2
Archbishop Williams 1
No. 1 Prep is moving on to the Elite 8 of the Division I tournament after its 2-1 handling of No. 16 Archbishop Williams Saturday night.
The Eagles’ opening tally came from Nick Brandano on a rocket (assisted by Paul Santosuosso). Then, after Archbishop Williams scored its equalizer, superstar Will Van Sicklin did his thing to put Prep back on top 2-1.
And that’s all she wrote. The Prep, which showed off a 40-15 shot advantage, held on the rest of the way to keep its season alive.
GIRLS HOCKEY
St. Mary’s 3
Bishop Fenwick 1
With the winner of Saturday’s girls hockey game between St. Mary’s and Bishop Fenwick moving on to face PLNR on Wednesday, the Lady Spartans wasted no time with a goal 20 seconds in from Maggie Pierce.
From there, Jenna Chaplain and Amanda Forziati provided the insurance as St. Mary’s fended off a tough Fenwick team for its 23rd win of the season. Fenwick’s Penny Levine-Stein scored the lone goal and goalie Ella Tucker stood strong with 40 saves.
