NAHANT — Town officials are urging the public to attend a virtual meeting on Thursday regarding the Northern Strand Expansion Project in Lynn and Nahant. The meeting, which is at 6:30 p.m. over Zoom, is being hosted by Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT).
At the meeting, a design and project plan will be proposed. The purpose of the meeting is so the public can become “fully acquainted” with the project.
“The proposed project consists of a construction of a two-way separated bike lane and shared-use trail facility – extending from the current Northern Strand terminus at Western Ave, along Market Square, S Common Street, Market Street, the Lynnway (Carroll Parkway), and Nahant Road for approximately 1.9 miles,” the event page on Nahant.org said. “The project seeks to provide safer and improved transportation access for bicycle users and pedestrians.”
According to MassDOT, the project will eliminate a travel lane.
“Existing sidewalks and street parking will be retained along the majority of the corridor with the exception of a few off-road connections in the form of a 10-ft wide shared-use path to complete the 1.9-miles. In addition to minor intersection improvements, some signal upgrades and timings are also proposed, along with pavement markings, signage, landscaping and ADA improvements along the corridor.”
Town Administrator Tony Barletta said the town is supportive of the project and is excited for the bike lane to be extended to the shores of Lynn.
“However, we have heard some concerns of the current design and urge residents and commuters to tune into this meeting and voice you know, […] whatever questions or concerns they may have,” Barletta said.
Registration is required and can be found on Nahant.org.
