LYNN — Lynn Classical enjoyed a successful winter sports campaign, headlined by the girls basketball team, which was a perfect 20-0 in the regular season. Looking forward, athletic director William Devin is “super excited” to get the spring season underway.
On Monday, the spring teams will officially start their seasons. Some of them are looking forward to repeating their success from last spring.
“Both our softball team and our baseball team are defending GBL champions,” Devin said. “They’re both returning very strong squads.”
Devin added that last season saw state tournament appearances for both the lacrosse and girls tennis teams, the former qualifying for the first time.
Although a lot of the teams are returning, there is also a new team being offered at Classical this spring – boys volleyball. They will be going straight into the deep end with a varsity team. The boys volleyball team will be coached by Chris LeBlanc, who is also the girls volleyball coach.
“He is an absolute volleyball fanatic,” Devin said. “He’s volleyball 24/7. He’s obsessed and passionate about the sport, and we’re super lucky to have Chris LeBlanc leading the way.”
The students are eager for spring to get underway, and Devin believes one reason is because of the “lull” between the winter and spring seasons.
“In between the fall and winter seasons, there’s not a lot of downtime because the winter teams start the Monday after Thanksgiving,” Devin said. “Between the winter and spring, there is a bit of a lull. The kids are chomping at the bit to get the season started.”
Devin believes the school’s multi-sport athletes help Classical’s sports program.
“Most of our students play multiple sports,” Devin said. “We don’t have a lot of kids that just play one sport. Those are the kids we rely on for our sports programs.”
“I’m hearing some of our girl basketball players are going to participate in track, and a number of them are also on the softball team,” he added. “It helps us a lot.”
One obstacle Classical will have to deal with is not being able to use Fraser Field until at least early May. All of the Rams’ JV and varsity home baseball games will be played at Breed Junior High School until construction is completed.
“My fingers are crossed, especially for the seniors, that we can play at Fraser starting on May 1,” Devin said.
Fraser Field’s outfield is currently being turfed, and its lighting and netting is also being upgraded.
“I can’t wait to see what it looks like,” Devin said. “I think it’s going to look fantastic.”
