I am responding to a story in the Daily Item, March 11, “City to enforce parking rules to clean downtown streets.”
I applaud both Public Works Commissioner Andrew Hall and Parking Director Robert Stilian for their crackdown on illegal parking.
My question to them is, what about the rest of the city? There are hundreds of cars all over the city, rolled up on sidewalks.
Some are a foot onto the sidewalk. Others are several feet onto the sidewalk – see Myrtle Street.
Still others completely block the sidewalk – see Dungeon Avenue. Ticket and tow them. Fifty dollar tickets and $170 towing fees should prompt a change in behavior.
Traffic and parking enforcement (rather than collections) reside within the Police Department.
Ticket and towing fees go directly to the City, rather than the police, but these fees should be used to offset police efforts in enforcement.
These fees would more than offset the cost for any traffic personnel used. Let’s enforce parking regulations across the City of Lynn uniformly, not selectively.
