You know what I’ve been thinking? In the week of St. Mary’s Athletics, this should just about do it. As the only local team to win a state title this past week, this one’s got to go to the Lady Spartans of girls basketball. And, man, I had a front row seat – there were lots of challenges in their way Saturday. First off, the Bishop Fenwick girls meant business. Led by head coach Adam DeBaggis, star player Cecilia Kay, and a slew of promising underclassmen, they took it to St. Mary’s in the third quarter. Seriously, head coach Jeff Newhall called a timeout, the Fenwick faithful were roaring, and it was truly a toss-up. But in the end, St. Mary’s is, simply put, a great team. From Yirsy Queliz, to Niya Morgen, and to a few others, its upperclassmen did the number one thing in their job description: lead. And, in the end, the Spartans were the ones standing in 45-41 fashion to win the Division 3 title. They went out in style, also. The student section embraced the Spartans, the ceremony was nothing but emotional, and it served as a great conclusion to a dominant book. St. Mary’s, good week, and good year.
