LYNNFIELD — If you get a call from what may appear to be a Lynnfield number and the caller asks for donations to the police department, hang up.
Over the weekend, Lynnfield Police Department (LPD) made a post on Facebook warning residents of these calls. The post said that these calls have come to the attention of LPD.
“This is a scam, we will never call requesting donations,” LPD wrote in the post. “Please do not give these callers any money or personal information.”
According to a November 2022 article from CNBC, phone scams are rising. The article stated that in 2022, around 70 million Americans lost money to phone call scams. The scammers, it said, made $40 billion.
To help prevent these scams, LPD provided a link to the Federal Communications Commission’s page on frauds, scams, and alerts.
“Below is a link with some useful information on some of the most common known scams and how to prevent being a victim of them,” LPD wrote.
