LYNN — The St. Mary’s boys lacrosse team fell to a strong Matignon group 9-2 beneath the bright lights of Manning Field on Wednesday.
The game opened with the Knights finding space in front of the Spartans’ (0-2) defense and capitalizing for a quick 1-0 lead – the first chapter in an offense-heavy story.
The Spartans didn’t let the early goal phase them, however, responding with a well-worked team play. The goal came in transition and, after some quick passes upfield, Joey Calder slotted the ball past the goalie to even things 1-1.
Then came some pressure. Matignon responded with four unanswered goals, including a tone-setter in the second half just 30 seconds into the third quarter.
The Knights scooped up ground balls and won the majority of face-offs, only giving them more possessions and opportunities.
Despite having its fair share of shots on goal, St. Mary’s junior goalie Steven Lake came up with some big saves early to keep St. Mary’s in it.
Although not everything was clicking for St. Mary’s, it did show its potential on more than one occasion.
One of those moments occurred in the third quarter when junior attackman, and captain, Ben Fry received the ball. Fry eluded Matignon’s initial defender and used his speed to get past a second before finding teammate Calder five yards from the net. From there, Calder ripped a shot and scored his second goal.
The Knights, again, found twine just before the third quarter ended to give them a 6-2 lead. Matignon scored three more goals in the fourth quarter to leave Lynn victorious.
St. Mary’s next game is on the road when it travels to Essex Tech at 10 a.m.
