The St. Mary’s baseball team is 2-0 on the young season after its 5-0 victory against Danvers on Thursday, and what a day it was for Josh Doney. He not only pitched a complete game, but did so with 10 strikeouts.
On offense, Doney recorded two hits for two RBI, while Tommy Falasca scored a run to go with his triple. St. Mary’s travels to take on Boston English Saturday at noon.
BASEBALL
St. John’s Prep 7
Walpole 3
William Shaheen recorded two hits and two RBI, Marco Zirpolo collected two RBI, Nate Marston walked twice, and the St. John’s Prep baseball team cruised to a 7-3 victory against Walpole at Frates Field.
Prep’s Joe Williams earned the win on the mound, pitching six innings and retiring six batters. The Eagles return to the diamond Monday at 4 p.m. in a home matchup against St. John’s.
Boston Collegiate Charter 7
Lynn Tech 0
The Lynn Tech baseball team fought until the end, but was handled by Boston Collegiate 7-0 on Thursday. Will McCafferty had a strong performance on the hill, striking out 10 batters before being relieved in the fourth inning.
“We had a tough night,” Tech head coach Eddie Lewis said. “This is a young team. I have a great group of guys. We will learn from tonight’s game and we’re looking forward to bouncing back.”
The Tigers will have a chance to do just that Tuesday in a road matchup against North Reading with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
Peabody 7
Winthrop 3
The Peabody baseball team took the diamond for the first time this season, and left it with a 7-3 win against Winthrop.
Mike Petro earned the win after five innings of strong pitching, while Ryan Brunet and Sam Oliveri each recorded two hits. Anthony Silva added a triple, and the Tanners are off to a 1-0 start.
SOFTBALL
St Mary’s 10
Newton South 1
Another game, another win for the St. Mary’s girls lacrosse team after a 10-1 demolition of Newton South. Continuing her stellar start to the spring, Anna Fringuelli pitched seven innings, retiring 11 batters and allowing just two walks.
Then, there were the multi-hit performers – three of them, to be exact. Ashanthy Pardilla batted 2-for-4, including a home run and two RBI. Michaela Walker went 3-for-4 to go with four RBI, and Lorynes Suriel batted 2-for4 with a pair of RBI.
St. Mary’s (3-0) returns to action Tuesday in a road matchup against Archbishop Williams at 3:30 p.m.

Lynn Tech junior Angelina Martin punched out six batters as the Tigers took care of KIPP 20-8 on Thursday.
Making her debut behind the plate, as well as playing well defensively, was Tech freshman Camila Rufino Santos. And talk about consistency – Tech’s Zoe Wilson had seven at-bats, and scored runs on each and every one of them.
“In her seven times at bat, between walks and a couple of singles, she reached base and scored all seven,” Tech head coach Beth Mercaldi said.

The Lynnfield softball team may have been doubled up by a tough Newburyport team on Thursday, but there weren’t plenty of positives to take away.
Junior Ava Gamache went 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot, registering two runs and an RBI, while sophomore Morgan Hubbard and senior Ava Marotta each connected for two hits apiece.
The Pioneers fell to 1-1 on the season (0-1 in the Cape Ann League), and look to get back on track in their home-opener Monday afternoon.
BOYS LACROSSE
Swampscott 6
Hamilton-Wenham 5
The Swampscott boys lacrosse team “was able to grind out the win” according to head coach Geoff Beckett. The Big Blue won 6-5 against Hamilton-Wenham.
Christian Urbano led the way with two goals, while Jason Rothwell, Jason Codispoti, Liam Herlihy, and Liam Keaney all scored. Keaney also scored the game-winning goal in the fourth quarter, giving Timmy Sheehan (3 saves) the win between the pipes.
“We dominated the possession for most of the game, won most of the faceoffs, and played solid defense,” Beckett said. “Hamilton had a great middie that scored five goals, but we were able to slow him down in the fourth quarter. They also had a great goalie who had 14 saves.”

Headlined by Peabody’s Dan Vatousios recording 14 saves, the Tanners just barely edged Danvers 7-6 at home.
If you were in the mood for offense Thursday, you didn’t have to look much further than Lucas Rotker – the Tanner found twine four times. Jake Ryan and Jaxson Vogel also scored, while Colby Dunham, Sean Rivard, and Brady Tersolo played the role of facilitators with an assist apiece.

GIRLS LACROSSE
Ipswich 6
Marblehead 5
The Marblehead girls lacrosse team fought hard, but it wasn’t enough to top Ipswich. The Magicians lost 6-5 and fell to 0-3.
That said, Marblehead won the second half 2-1, and Ramona Gillett led the charge with three goals and three ground balls collected. Gretchen Smith contributed with two goals and Sydney Langton dished out an assist, while Addie Lydon stood strong between the pipes with nine saves.
Marblehead’s Lucy Wales, Maddie Forbes, and Kate Burns all played well in the loss.
Winthrop 12
Saugus 1
After two 10-goal performances to start the season, the Saugus girls lacrosse team saw its momentum come to a halt against Winthrop.
The Sachems were bested 12-1 in enemy territory, with Nina Penachio scoring the lone goal. Saugus returns home Wednesday against Whittier with the opening faceoff set for 4 p.m.
BOYS TENNIS

In its season-opener, things didn’t go Swampscott’s way in boys tennis. That said, there’s lots of potential for the Big Blue.
In singles play, Charles Schepens snagged the win in a third set-battle against Will Gern (5-7, 6-4, 7-5). And in doubles, Nick Custer and Trevor Talebian won a close one (6-2, 6-1) against Jayden Wang and Max Clark.

Coming off its 18-2 season in which Lynnfield won the Cape Ann League, it’s off to a good start in 2023. Shea McCarthy, Dan Levin, and Avi Shrivstara each won in singles, giving up just one set between the three of them.
In doubles play, the Pioneers picked up two more wins to improve to 1-1 on the season.

There’s no shame in losing to the defending Division 2 state champions as the Lynnfield girls tennis team was bested by Newburyport in its season-opener.
Maddie Sieve won her singles match (6-2, 6-3) for Lynnfield’s lone victory. The Lady Pioneers look for their first win of the season Monday when they host Triton.
VOLLEYBALL

The Lynn Classical volleyball team was bested by Salem at home in set scores of 25-20, 25-21, and 25-18. That said, Thursday featured a strong performance from outside hitter Viet Tran who registered six kills.
The Rams return to the hardwood Monday in a road match against Everett.
