The St. John’s Prep lacrosse team upped its record to 2-0 Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought, 12-8 win against Acton Boxborough at home. Jimmy Ayers scored the final four goals for the Eagles to finish with six and two helpers.
Chris Esposito played well in the face off category (18 for 22), helping the Eagles maintain possession throughout the game. Nick Schibli and Greyson Ambrosh were effective on defense, while Gavin Kornitsky made 11 saves on 19 shots for Prep.
Luke Kelly, Rowan Mondello, Nate Jones, Esposito, Matt Morrow, Cam McCarthy, and Noah Brown all found twine.
The Eagles return to action Tuesday when they travel to Morrissey Boulevard for a rematch of the 2022 state championship against the Boston College Eagles (1-0) at 5:30 p.m.
BOYS LACROSSE
Essex Tech 20
St. Mary’s 2
Well, if you’re looking for the theme of this one, look no further than Essex Tech’s Fisher Gadbois scoring seven goals alongside two assists in his team’s 20-2 thrashing of St. Mary’s.
Although brief, the Spartans had their moments, but a poor showing in the face off category and a failure to capitalize on offense will do it to anyone.
St. Mary’s looks to get back on track Monday at Archbishop Williams (4 p.m.).
BASEBALL
Boston English 9
St. Mary’s 7
After two early wins against Matignon and Danvers, the St. Mary’s baseball team was bested for the first time this season. Boston English defended its home diamond in a narrow 9-7 win against the Spartans.
It was certainly hard-fought. Carlos De La Rosa (1-for-2, 4 RBI), Tad Giardina (2-for-3, 3 runs), and Seth Sullivan (2-for-4, 1 RBI) all played well in the batter’s box for St. Mary’s, which returns to play Tuesday in a home game against Archbishop Williams at 3:30 p.m.
Peabody 5
Swampscott 4
Cam Connolly did it all for the Peabody baseball team in Saturday’s 5-4 decision against Swampscott, earning the win and going 3-for-3 with two RBI.
The Tanners jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, and after the Big Blue tied things 3-3, Ryan Brunet connected on a single to plate Connolly (4-3). From there, after runs from each side, Jariel Tolentino snagged the save to put a lid on it.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Masconomet 11
Peabody 10
There was no shame Saturday as the Peabody girls lacrosse team was just barely edged by Masco 11-0 in a matchup of Northeastern Conference powerhouses. Madi Barrett did her thing with six goals and two assists, while Caitlin Snow stood strong between the pipes with six key saves.
Ally Bettencourt, Angela Fabbo, Brooke Lomasney, and Siobhan Smith all played well in the face off category. Peabody looks to defend home field Tuesday against Reading at 4 p.m.
TRACK AND FIELD
It was a strong Saturday morning for the St. Mary’s track and field teams in a Bishop Fenwick-hosted Catholic Meet.
The boys (4-0) defeated Matignon, Arlington Catholic, Fenwick, and St. John’s Prep. Event winners were Jesse Moriello (400 hurdles), Nick Fusco (2 mile), Kyle Kwiatek (mile), Andrew Potter (shot put), Tyler Cunningham (discus), Brett O’Brien (javelin), Anthony D’Itria (high jump and triple jump) and Dylan Moroney (long jump).
On the girls’ side, they bested Matignon and St. Joseph Prep, but fell to Arlington Catholic and Fenwick. On top of the 4×100 relay team winning the event, Kelsey Kwiatek, Kaelyn Jennings, Samantha Sok, Cierra Johnson, Ellie Fox, and Tina Amin all submitted strong performances.
