The Marblehead baseball team picked up its second win of the season after a 12-1 rout of Manchester Essex on Monday. The Magicians raced out to a 4-0 lead through the first three innings before cruising the rest of the way. Marblehead senior pitcher Ian Maude shut down the Manchester Essex offense, retiring five batters in as many innings to go with one earned run. Setting the tone for the Magicians’ offense was junior Charlie Sachs (3 RBI, 2 runs), junior Chris Cannuscio (2 RBI, 2 runs) and senior Shane Keough (2 RBI, 2 runs). Marblehead (2-1) will travel to face Peabody Tuesday afternoon.

Lynnfield head coach John O’Brien was more than pleased with his team’s 12-5 victory against Haverhill on Monday, just two days after the Pioneers bested Lynn Classical on opening day.
“Haverhill is a good team, so this was a nice showing and a good win,” O’Brien said. “We pitched well, had a balanced offensive attack, and played really good defense, which is great.”
Dave Tracy threw the first four innings for the Pioneers in the win and sophomore Maddox Iovinelli picked up a three-inning save. Tyler Adamo (2 hits and 2 RBI) and Alex Gentile (2 hits) led the way for the Lynnfield offense. The Pioneers (2-0) will take on Belmont Saturday morning.

Rams starting pitcher Kevin Whalen dominated on the mound, and he stifled the Crimson Tide, throwing six innings that included 10 strikeouts, two hits and two walks. Classical had a balanced offense, led by Almani Gerardo (2 hits), Yoniel Cabral (2 hits, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored) and Ben Marciano (2 hits and 2 RBI). Classical (2-1) will hit the road and take on Malden Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs fell behind 4-1 at the end of the first inning, and were playing catch up the rest of the way. English had a strong day at the plate, as they outhit Somerville 9-8. Leading the way for the Bulldogs were leadoff hitter Guilmer Galva (2 hits and 3 runs scored), Janier Rodriguez (2 hits, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored) and Kenry Manzanillo (2 hits, 1 RBI and 1 run scored).

Arianna Laboy threw a gem for the Bulldogs, as she threw a complete game one-hitter, and struck out 16 batters in the process. The English trio of Kate Johnson (3-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored), Leanyah Piniero (4-5, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored) and Jari Perez (3-5, 2 RBI and 1 run scored), provided the offense for the Bulldogs.

It was a battle between the 2022 Greater Boston League conference co-champions Lynn Classical and Everett. It was the home opener for Classical, but they fell short as Everett came out victorious on this occasion. Rachel Dana had a strong day at the plate for the Rams (2-3, triple, 1 RBI and 1 run scored). Classical pitcher MeKayla Poisson had a solid performance on the mound with eight strikeouts and four earned runs, Poisson also had a hit and scored a run at the dish.

Lynnfield junior third baseman Ava Gamache had a strong performance at the plate (2-3) and is now 7-11 on the season. Pioneers sophomore Kaila George got on base and scored the lone run. Morgan Hubbard and Lauren Amico also had one hit apiece for Lynnfield. The Pioneers (1-2) will host Ipswich on Wednesday.

The Big Blue held off a feisty Vikings team at home. Leading the way for Swampscott was the captain duo of junior Coco Clopton (3 goals) and senior Abby Eichler (3 goals and 1 assist). Sophomore Avery Laundry added two goals and senior captain Brooke Waters finished off the scoring for the Big Blue (1 goal). Freshman Lilah Caplan was strong in net for Swampscott (12 saves). Big Blue (2-0) will host the Magicians on Thursday.

The Magicians trailed the Panthers 6-5 at the end of the first half, but were unable to forge ahead in the second half. Leading the way for Marblehead were Sydney Langton (5 goals and 1 assist). Lucy Wales (2 goals), Ramona Gillett (1 goal and 1 assist), Isabelle Ferrante (1 goal), Maddie Forbes (1 goal) and Gretchen Smith (1 goal), who all found the back of the net for the Magicians.

Payton Quirk had a strong showing in goal for St. Mary’s despite what the score read (19 saves). Ava Nason (3 goals) and Jill Kirby (2 goals) led the way on the offensive end for the Spartans.

Leading the way for Marblehead was the trio of Connor Cronin (4 goals and 3 assists), Charlie Grenier (4 goals and 1 assist) and Reece Moore (3 goals and 3 assists). Baxter Jennings (2 goals and 1 assist) and Carter Laramie (2 goals), also had strong performances for the Magicians.

Spartans Sal Brogna and Finn Racki each scored the first career varsity goal in a hard-fought loss. Joey Calder (3 goals), Jack Hall (2 goals) and Ben Fry (1 goal and 4 assists), all had solid performances for St. Mary’s. The Spartans will look to bounce back on Wednesday, as they will take on Fenwick.

The Big Blue were led by Jason Codispoti, as he finished with a team-high five goals. Liam Kearney (2 goals and 4 assists) and Christian Urbano (2 goals and 2 assists) chipped in with solid performances for Swampscott as well. Jason Rothwell (1 goal) and Liam Herlihy (1 goal) wrapped up the scoring for the Big Blue.

Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman was impressed by her team’s showing, especially since it’s their first match of the 2023 season.
“It was a gritty win all around,” Ackerman said. “Perfect way to open the season, and get the players tested with strong opponents. I was especially pleased with the way all three of our singles players played incredibly close matches, and all came out winners.”

sophomores Ethan Farfel and Jayden Janock (first doubles, 6-1, 6-4) and senior co-captain Jimmy King and sophomore Luke Miller (second doubles, 6-1, 6-1).

Big Blue freshman Sam Schepens picked his first career varsity win at second singles over Charlie Virden. The rest of the winners for Swampscott were: Charles Schepens (first singles, 6-4, 7-5); Maxim Zeissig (third singles, 6-4. 4-6, 6-4) and Nick Custer and Trevor Talebian (first doubles, 6-2, 6-0). The Big Blue improved its record to 1-1.

The Rams fell just short in the final set against the Crimson Tide (19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-28 and 8-15). Classical senior setter Karim Chinchilla recorded 21 assists, two kills and five digs. Sophomore outside hitter Viet Tran had 19 kills and 11 digs for the Rams. Jeremiah Vargas also had a strong showing for Classical (two blocks and three kills). The Rams will next face Malden on the road Wednesday afternoon.

The Sachems had a solid team performance in the loss. Leading the way for Saugus was Jessica Bremberg, as she was a double winner triple jump, 32’5 and 400 meters, 1:06.2). Destiny Okoye took first in the long jump (15’2) and tied first in the 100 meters (12.7).
