The KIPP baseball team escaped with a 4-3 win against Nashoba on Tuesday, and it’s safe to say – several Panthers put their paws on this one.
Different sports season, same Morenel Castro. The football star didn’t stop after KIPP’s Super Bowl appearance last fall, and is off to a fast start on the baseball diamond. He retired six batters and allowed just one run in six innings, also recording a triple and a run on the other end.
Chanel Gutierrez went 2-for-3 with a walk, three stolen bases, and two runs scored, while Bryan Conde roped a two-RBI double in the fifth. Castro struck out the top of Nashoba’s batting order in the sixth inning to seal the deal (the game ended due to light).

North Reading 17
Lynn Tech 0
Errors cost Lynn Tech on Tuesday in its 17-0 loss against North Reading, but there was no shame from head coach Eddie Lewis.
“These guys are going to turn things around,” Lewis said. “It’s early in the season right now.”
Despite timely mistakes putting the score out of reach, Lewis gave credit to Tech’s senior captain Kolby Bucklin for his early success at the plate.
“He’s hitting really well for us right now,” Lewis said.
But in the end, Tuesday wasn’t for Tech as North Reading improved to 2-0 on the season.
“It was really tough for us,” Lewis said. “We played a good baseball team today.”

St. Mary’s 5
Archbishop Williams 3
One two-run shot is good, but another is even better. Lori Suriel and Brooke Moloney each did so in St. Mary’s 5-3 road win against Archbishop Williams.
And, yet again, Anna Fringuelli did her thing on the mound, tossing nine strikeouts to headline her complete game. The Lady Spartans are 2-0 on the young season, and host Fenwick at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Greater Lawrence 17
Lynn Tech 1
Lynn Tech took on Greater Lawrence for the second time this season, and according to head coach Beth Mercaldi, the hitting just wasn’t there on Tuesday.
“Our bats were not very active for the most part,” Mercaldi said.
Tech scored its lone run after Genevieve McCafferty roped a base hit to center field to drive in Camila Rufino Santos.

Medford 12
Lynn 4
In a road matchup against a tough Medford team, Lynn fought hard, but fell 12-4 on Tuesday.
“We came out great… neck-and-neck the whole first half,” Lynn coach Peter Pappagianopoulos said. “We ran out of gas in the second half.”
John Crowley scored twice, while Steven DiFilippo and Jordan Em each added one apiece. Between the pipes, Christian Serino played a “solid game in net” to quote Pappagianopoulos.
A pair of Lynn Classical seniors, Nick Costa and Ryan Dunn, also played well. Lynn returns to Manning Field on Thursday for a date with Somerville at 5 p.m.
“That should be a good one,” Pappagianopoulos said.
