LYNN — Lynnfield Street construction is set to begin Tuesday between Cowdrey Avenue and Colonial Avenue, and will be conducted on Mondays through Fridays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
According to a Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) advisory, the project is estimated to continue until fall 2023.
“This roadway improvement project includes roadway reconstruction, roadway resurfacing, reconstruction of sidewalks, widening and reconstruction of channelization islands, installation of drainage systems, installation of an overhead flashing traffic beacon, and other incidental work,” the MassDOT advisory said.
Signage, traffic control devices, and police officers will help guide traffic through the construction zone, according to the advisory.
The project has been in the works for years. According to a proposal presented at a public hearing for the project in 2020, this section of Lynnfield Street has a high traffic volume during peak hours.
“The roadway serves as a major corridor to Route 128 and beyond,” the proposal said. “Observed physical conditions of the roadway include uneven and damaged sections of roadway pavement, poor sidewalks, faded pavement markings, and lack of pedestrian ramps.”
The purpose of the project is to improve conditions of the roadway and “the safety of vehicular, bicycle, and pedestrian operations within the project limits,” the proposal said.
According to mass.gov, the construction bid price was $5.5 million.
