Despite Swampscott’s Elizabeth Demady picking up a hit, it was all Saugus on Wednesday afternoon as the Sachems rolled to a 14-1 victory.
For the second time this week, Saugus’ Taylor Deleidi pitched a complete game, allowing just three hits to go along with two strikeouts. Kaitlyn Pugh went 4-for-4 while Danica Schena went 3-for-3. Sophomore Lilly Ventre went 2-for-4 including a two-run shot to round out Saugus’ offense.
Saugus has its first home game of the season this Friday in a 10 a.m. date with Gloucester.
SOFTBALL
Pentucket 18
Lynnfield 4
The Lynnfield softball team was bested by Pentucket 18-4 on Wednesday, dipping its record to 2-4.
Lauren Amico roped a two-run single, while Libby Considine and Celia Carbone tacked on RBI singles. Ava Gamache, Morgan Hubbard, and Abi Travers also had hits.
Lynnfield looks to get back on track Friday against Malden Catholic at 10:30 p.m.
Classical 20
Somerville 4
The Lynn Classical softball team upped its record to 3-2 after handling Somverville in enemy territory. Sophomore Nevaeh Eth blasted three homers, going 4-for-5 with six RBI – yes, you read those stats correctly.
Rachel Dana was 4-for-5 with four RBI, while MeKayla Poisson batted 3-for-5 to go with a home run and four RBI. She also threw a one-hitter while retiring eight batters.
Marblehead 12
Winthrop 0
The Lady Magicians had it going on Wednesday, shutting out Winthrop 12-0 to pick up another win. Pitcher Tessa Francis faced 18 batters, gave up just two hits, and recorded 13 strikeouts.
Ruby Calienes went 3-for-3 for Marblehead while driving in two runs. Ila Bumargin returned from a fractured finger and went 3-for-3 with a double and two singles. In total, Marblehead went home with nine hits.
Peabody 11
Danvers 0
Another day, another no-hitter for Peabody pitcher Abby Bettencourt – her third of the week as she racked up 16 strikeouts. After leading 3-0 in the first inning, both Bettencourt and Penny Spack each smashed home runs in the sixth to lift Peabody over Danvers 11-0.
BASEBALL
Winthrop 3
Saugus 2
In an extra-inning heartbreaker, Winthrop’s baseball team knocked off Saugus 3-2 in come-from-behind fashion.
The game was tied 2-2, but Winthrop ripped a double in the eighth inning to score a run and escape victorious.
Cam Soroko toed the rubber for Saugus, allowing two hits and two runs over six innings, striking out 12. Cam Bernard threw well in two innings of relief.
Shane Bourque led the offense, going 2-for-4 for Saugus.
Mansfield 3
St. John’s Prep 2
The Mansfield Hornets stung the St. John’s Prep Eagles on Wednesday in a narrow 3-2 matchup. Nate Marston and Jack Growney each recorded two hits for the Eagles, who had eight in total.
On the mound, Prep’s Jack Sarno allowed three hits and retired four batters across four innings. Henry Hebert relieved Sarno and struck out four in 3 2/3 innings.
Beverly 8
Marblehead 2
Marblehead got the first two of the game and had worked Beverly’s starting pitcher to 70 pitches through three innings, but Beverly scored seven in the fifth inning to highlight its comeback victory on Wednesday.
The Magicians were held to just three hits, but get a chance at revenge when they host Salem on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
BOYS LACROSSE
Marblehead 16
Danvers 3
The Marblehead boys lacrosse team remained undefeated on the season (6-0) with a 16-3 win against Danvers.
Colby Dunham scored two goals next to Jake Ryan who added another. Brady Tersolo dished out an assist, while Danny Vatousios stood strong with eight saves.
GIRLS TENNIS
Peabody 5
Winthrop 0
Jessica Chau, Yasmine Giacalone, and Valentina Goga all cruised in singles play, while the duos of Jill McGrath-Theodosia Kourtelidis and Jessica Demiri-Vanessa Kolani took care of business in doubles.
Chau’s matchup came down to the final set after losing the second, but the Tanner left victorious with a 6-2 win in the third set.
VOLLEYBALL
Classical 3
Somerville 2
Falling behind 2-1 might be a problem for some teams, but not for Classical volleyball on Wednesday. The Rams won the final two sets for their second consecutive win (2-4 overall).
Josh Gonzalez played a strong game with three kills and three blocks, while Karim Chinchilla caught eyes with 18 assists. Viet Tran also impressed with 11 kills.
The Rams look for three in a row on Monday against Chelsea.
TRACK AND FIELD
Swampscott’s girls track team finished second in a Northeastern Conference meet on Wednesday, scoring 60 points – only trailing Gloucester’s 97. Morgan Bilodeau impressed in triple jump (30′ 5.5) and Sofia Alvarado finished first in shot put (31’). Anastasia Hayes also snagged first with a 98′ 2.0 in discus.
