The Lynnfield softball team improved to 3-4 this season with a 12-7 win against Malden Catholic, which has five wins in its own right.
The Pioneers trailed 4-0 early on Friday, but a five-run sixth inning highlighted the comeback.
Senior Abi Travers had RBI and two-run singles, senior Ava Marotta went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Sophia Brown went the distance for the win, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits and three walks to go with three strikeouts.
SOFTBALL
Marblehead 9
Beverly 8
Marblehead was down 6-2 against Beverly, but it was just the beginning of a comeback story.
The visiting Magicians rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning for five runs, then Luka Bornhorst tied the game in the seventh inning with a deep double to center field.
Fast forward to the bottom of the eighth, and Hailey Schmitt knocked in Tessa Andriano for the eventual winning run.
Ila Bumagin went 3-for-3, driving in two runs for Marblehead.
Gloucester 6
Saugus 0
Saugus may have lost on Friday, but its record still stands at 4-2 this season. Caitlyn Pugh roped a single and Lily Ventre went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk.
Danica Schena played a strong game in the outfield, while Taylor Deleidi did the same on the mound.
BASEBALL
Lynn Classical 5
Lynn English 3
The Lynn Classical baseball team beat inner-city rival Lynn English in a continuation of Monday’s rain delay. Senior Kevin Whalen picked up the win on the mound, striking out seven and giving up three runs.
Classical’s Brady Warren ripped a double to plate two, and the win brings the Rams to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the Greater Boston League.
Chelmsford 7
St. John’s Prep 6
Friday was a competitive one between St. John’s Prep and Chelmsford, but Chemsford’s six-run second inning was the difference-maker. Trailing 7-2 in the seventh, Prep rattled off four straight runs, but to no avail.
There was no shortage of hitting, however, as Prep recorded 13 hits. Cam LaGrassa (3 hits), Aidan Driscoll (2), Nate Marston (2), Will Shaheen (2), and Marco Zirpolo (2) all played well.
Prep, which committed two more errors than Chelmsford, dipped its record to 3-3.
Masconomet 7
Swampscott 3
Swampscott spotted Masconomet four runs across the first two innings, and to that end, couldn’t get any closer.
Junior right-handed pitchers Jake McGonagle and Quinn Fitzpatrick pitched well in relief, and offensively, Luca Croft ripped an RBI single to go with a run.
Nick Berube had a two-run single and Connor Chiarello had two hits. Swampscott fell to 1-6 and travels to face Lynnfield at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Danvers 7
Peabody 4
The Tanners didn’t get the result they wanted, falling to Danvers 7-4. That said, positives were aplenty. Peabody’s Ryan Brunet ripped a two-run single and Reymi Andino went 3-for-3 at the plate.
It was a tough week for the Tanners, but they’re back in action at 4 p.m. on Tuesday against Masconomet.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Georgetown 14
St. Mary’s 8
Payton Quirk recorded eight saves, Ava Nason scored four goals, and Jill Kirby ripped three, but St. Mary’s girls lacrosse team fell to Georgetown on Friday.
Saribelle Diaz played a strong defensive game, while Vanessa Hall (1 goal, 2 assists), and Kasey Litwin (1 assist) also contributed.
BOYS TENNIS
Marblehead 5
Gloucester 0
On a sunny, but cool afternoon in Gloucester, Marblehead’s boys tennis team escaped with a 5-0 victory. Austin Bacon racked up his first varsity win in second doubles, teaming up with fellow sophomore Luke Miller.
Coming off an injury, Mika Garber had a good win in singles against a strong opponent. Marblehead upped its record to 3-0 in league play and 3-2 overall.
GIRLS TENNIS

Gloucester 0
Marblehead’s girls tennis team moved to 4-0 after shutting out Gloucester. In singles action, Andrea Potvin defeated Sophia Picario, Courtney Yoder bested Grace Teirney, and Aviva Bornstein took care of Marissa Vincent.
As for doubles, the combinations of Lani Gilmore-Reese Friedman and Aoife Bresnahan-Samara Dosch got the job done.
