LYNN — Lynn police teamed up with Rotarians to distribute over 250 bags filled with groceries to those in need on Friday.
On the third Friday of each month from 9-11 a.m., residents of Lynn, Lynnfield, Nahant, Saugus, and Swampscott can pick up a bag of free groceries as part of Greater Boston Food Bank’s Brown Bag/Mobile Markets Program.
During the pandemic, the Lynn Police Department and the Lynn Rotary Club began to jointly volunteer at Greater Lynn Senior Services (GLSS) to distribute the bags. GLSS provides a multitude of services to the elderly, primarily those from Lynn.
Even though COVID-19 lockdowns are over, every third Friday, some Lynn Rotarians and police officers still join together to help the cause.
Without their assistance, GLSS would have to pull staff members away from other essential duties to distribute the bags. Chief Executive Officer of GLSS Kathryn Burns said she greatly appreciates the help she receives from those two civic organizations.
Although the service is mainly geared toward those with food insecurity, anyone can receive groceries from GLSS. The bags include both shelf-stable and fresh items. There are no age or income requirements for the program and there is no application process. Interested parties can sign up over the phone or in-person during the program.
