Nathan Lopez tied his personal record in the one-mile (4:13) and the St. John’s Prep track and field team won the Division 1 state relays for the third consecutive year. It’s the Eagles’ fourth in the last five seasons.
“It was a pretty impressive performance by our entire team,” coach Zachary Lankow said.
Prep totaled 87 points, followed by Lexington with 68. Tireni Asenuga and Drew McStay also recorded first place finishes, and what a Saturday it was for the high-flying Eagles.
BASEBALL
Lynn Tech 15
Salem Academy 1
Tech coach Eddie Lewis said it best, as Lynn Tech’s baseball team had everything going against Salem Academy on Saturday.
“Things are just clicking for us right now. We were looking to carry over that momentum from the last game and we did just that,” Lewis said. “We were able to make a lot of good things happen out there today.”
He’s right. Will McCafferty got the win in five innings with 11 strikeouts. Colin Newhall and Chris Boyd each batted 3-for-3 with three RBI, Mario Giordano went 2-for-4, and Eddie Lewis went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
“All the guys are playing for each other, and the team chemistry is at an all-time high right now. Having the will, drive, and determination to get better every day is a major focus for us at this point,” Lewis said. “We just want to keep playing the best baseball that we can regardless of the outcome. We played extremely well in all phases of the game today.”
Malden Catholic 7
St. Mary’s 3
The Spartans dropped to 4-6 on Saturday after a road loss to Malden Catholic. Josh Doney was strong on the mound, allowing two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings to go with six strikeouts.
Tommy Falasca had a hit and an RBI. St. Mary’s returns to action Tuesday when the Spartans travel to face Arlington Catholic at 3:30 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Peabody 6
Amesbury 2
Another game, another no-hitter for Peabody’s Abby Bettencourt in her team’s 6-2 win against Amesbury on Saturday. The right-hander also recorded 16 strikeouts.
Things were scoreless until Lizzy Bettencourt hit a solo shot to make it 1-0. From there, Abby and Bo Bettencourt registered doubles to make it 3-0.
Despite two unearned runs from Amesbury, Peabody held on to continue its stellar start to the season.
BOYS LACROSSE
St. John’s Prep 15
La Salle Academy 14
The St. John’s Prep Eagles (10-1), frankly, stole one in overtime from La Salle Academy. In extra time, Chris Esposito’s 29th face-off win set things up, and Jake Vana’s game-winner ended it.
St. John’s Prep opened the game on a 4-0 run, but it was short-lived with the Rams tying it up. The half ended with Will Sawyer potting a rebound goal at the buzzer to give Prep a 9-8 lead.
La Salle built up a four-goal lead in the third quarter, but the Eagles never quit. Jimmy Ayers scored with six seconds remaining in regulation to set up Vana’s overtime heroics.
