SWAMPSCOTT — MBTA commuter rail service on the Rockport/Gloucester line was interrupted Tuesday morning after a train struck and killed a man in Swampscott.
According to Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan, an adult male was trespassing along the right of way of the Rockport/Gloucester eastbound line between the Swampscott and Salem stations when he was fatally struck at approximately 10:05 a.m.
At 11 a.m., several law enforcement and first-response vehicles lined the street, forming a perimeter around the tracks. State police, transit police, and Swampscott police were on the scene assisting with the investigation. Members of the Swampscott Fire Department assisted law enforcement officers, lending them ladders to enter and exit the tracks.
Transit police detectives and representatives from the Essex County District Attorney’s Office were on scene investigating the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. In a written statement, Sullivan said transit police did not suspect foul play.
At 11:45 a.m., two vans from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner arrived on-scene. Police have not yet released the victim’s identity.
Passengers on Newburyport/Rockport-line trains should expect severe delays in both directions due to police activity. Buses will replace train service between Swampscott and Salem until further notice.
“On behalf of the MBTA organization I extend our most sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the decedent,” Sullivan said.
