LYNN — The Lynn Classical baseball team (10-1) lost its season-opener against Lynnfield, but that’s old news. Since then, the Rams have won 10 in a row – the most recent coming Thursday night against Medford.

Not only was there the 8-2 win, but the Rams accomplished another goal in the process.

“We accomplished our first team goal of the season, which is to make the state tournament,” said Classical coach Mike Zukowski.

Classical got it going with three runs in the first inning. Darnell Leon scored from second base on an overthrow (1-0), then Christian Figueroa singled to score Brady Warren (2-0).

Yoniel Cabrera kept the scoring going with a double to right-center field to score Figueroa (3-0).

Classical kept it rolling in the second with two more runs – courtesy of an Almani Medina sacrifice fly, and a Warren triple to make things 5-0 in favor of the hosts.

Medford never quit, however, adding two runs in the third to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Then came the Medina show. He registered two more RBI in the fourth and fifth innings with a single and sacrifice fly. Ethan Chevalier scored on a stolen base throwing error to complete the scoring in the fifth inning.

Classical co-captain Kevin Whalen put in a strong performance on the mound with two runs allowed, no walks, and eight strikeouts in a perfect game.

“He threw 92 pitches and 69 strikes. He fields his position well and has great command,” Zukowski said. “We feel comfortable when he’s on the mound.”

Classical returns home this Saturday at 10 a.m. against Everett.
