To the editor:
Vision Lynn is a long document: 141 pages. Word searches are useful in determining patterns.
The only mentions of “conserv” are two instances of the “Massachusetts Department of CONSERVation and Recreation (DCR)”, one referencing the Lynnway, the other referencing coastal resilience and the Saugus River.
Having been through a drought with our reservoir at 38 percent capacity, shouldn’t water conservation be part of “the vision?” Industries are not the only ones to identify as “water-dependent.” WE do not do well without water.
I am pleased to report that two recent apartment buildings were/are being constructed with water being brought to each apartment and an individual water meter to accomplish billing.
So — maybe — Lynn is leading the way. We need to lead the state. We need to make this a state mandate in new construction – just like in 1988, when the Massachusetts Legislature mandated low-flow toilets in all new construction. That became a national mandate in 1992.
So, are we agitating, calling our legislators? Have our mayor and city councilors picked up their phones? And can our Vision Lynn consider broader aspects of conservation to trigger our imaginations? Our children deserve an answer.
Sincerely,
Mary Sweeney
Lynn resident
