BOYS TENNIS
Lynnfield 5
North Reading 0
Lynnfield’s boys tennis team (8-1) kept its stellar season intact with a 5-0 victory against conference opponent North Reading. Shea McCarthy, Rafik Khodr, and Avi Shriustara shined in singles, and the Pioneers return to action against Hamilton-Wenham on Thursday.
Marblehead 4
Swampscott 1
In a battle of rivals, Marblehead (9-2) got the better of Swampscott on Tuesday with a 4-1 victory – the same score as the first meeting between the teams this season.
Like clockwork the past few months, Mika Garber, Jost Eggebrecht, and Matthew Sherf cleaned house in singles to put Marblehead on top 3-0, and a doubles win from Etan Farfel and Jayden Janock gave the Magicians the win.
Marblehead remains undefeated (9-0) in the Northeastern Conference.
“The tennis played on all five courts was of the highest caliber,” Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal said.
St. Mary’s 4
Arlington Catholic 1
The Spartans (5-4) got the job done against Arlington Catholic, winning four of five sets. Thomas Shea impressed in singles, while the doubles combinations of Chris Lutchman-Brendan Zollo and Griffin L’Italien-Daniel Pimentel rounded out St. Mary’s winners.
GIRLS TENNIS
Marblehead 3
Swampscott 2
Talk about trading shots – that’s exactly what these rivals did on Tuesday. But in the end, the Magicians (8-1) did their thing against the Big Blue (4-5).
Marblehead got victories from Pauline Geissler and Charly Cooper in singles before Lucia Levin and Aoife Bresnahan put the Magicians on top for good.
“The two matches we lost were super close. Swampscott, in second singles, played really well and showed great athletic prowess to secure that point,” Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman said. “I knew first doubles would be a battle, as [in] their last match played, they went three sets. They had great points and both teams had to stay focused to keep it close. There were back and forth classic doubles points that were great to watch.”
Swampscott’s two points came from Laine Foutes in second singles (7-5, 6-3), and the duo of
Anna Ratner and Victoria Quagrello in first doubles (5-7, 6-2, 10-7).
St. Mary’s 4
Arlington Catholic 1
It’s never too late for your first win of the season, as St. Mary’s girls tennis team knocked off Arlington Catholic 4-1. Riley Maguire, Sara Pitrone and Olivia Egan were all victorious in singles, and a doubles win from Layla Trahant and Anna Wood was all the Spartans needed.
TRACK AND FIELD
St. Mary’s girls track team (4-4-1) may have lost to Feehan on Tuesday, but picked up a win against Stang as Kelsey Kwiatek won the mile. On the boys’ side, the Spartans (8-1) also lost to Feehan, and beat Stang. Kyle Kwiatek won the mile and 2-mile, and the 4×1 relay team put on a show in Attleboro.
