Classical softball shuts out English

Classical’s softball team (8-3) got the better of English (4-8) Wednesday afternoon, winning 18-0. Rachel Dana (5 strikeouts) got the start and threw a one-hit shutout for the Rams. Dana also went 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs and two RBI.

Lauren Wilson hit a home run for the Rams, and Eliana Alas went perfect at the plate going 4-for-4. Kaliegh Bullock also recorded her first varsity hit. 

The Rams moved to 8-2 in the Greater Boston League, while the Bulldogs fell to 3-6.

BASEBALL

Winthrop 3

Swampscott 1

Swampscott’s baseball team (2-12) lost a close game in Winthrop by a 3-1 score. Jamison Ford pitched five strong innings, allowing two hits and two runs while retiring five.

Swampscott had five hits in total with Nick Berube registering three of them. Michael Collins also recorded an RBI single. 

The Big Blue host Marblehead on Thursday. 

BC High 4

St. John’s Prep 3

St. John’s Prep (7-6) played well against rival BC High on Wednesday, but fell 4-3 in a heartbreaker. Sophomore James Willett recorded two doubles and an RBI, while Cam LaGrassa went 2-for-3 with a walk. 

The Eagles look to bounce back Monday when they host Catholic Memorial at 3 p.m. 

SOFTBALL

Peabody 8

Masco 0

Another day, another 16-strikeout performance from Peabody’s Abby Bettencourt. The junior allowed just two hits on her way to a shutout victory. Bettencourt also added to her home run tally, taking a shot deep in the first inning.

The Tanners were ahead 7-0 and didn’t look back. Peabody will travel to Saugus on Friday at 4 p.m. 

GIRLS TENNIS

Lynnfield 4

Triton 1

Lynnfield (8-3) just keeps on winning. In first and second singles, Paige Martino and Genna Gioioso won their respectives matchups 6-0, 6-1 to get things started.

Leticia Marafon and Lily Alves swept their opponents 6-0, 6-0 in first doubles, and in second doubles, Ella Hayman and Vicky McCrann teamed up to win 6-3, 6-1.

English 3

Classical 2

It was a back-and-forth match between two inter-city rivals, but the Bulldogs earned bragging rights on Wednesday. 

In first singles, Yankarla Matias Lopez won her match in a tiebreaker, taking the third and final set 12-10. In second singles, Heaven Veliz De Leon won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, and in third singles, Sophia Johansson won her matchup 6-2, 6-0. 

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

Beverly 86

Marblehead 50

Marblehead did its best, but fell to Beverly. First place Magicians were Alex Hersey (triple jump, 110 meter hurdles), Graham Firestone (javelin), Errol Apostolopoulos (400 meters), Harrison Curtis (100 meters), and Isaac Gross (1 mile). 

Amesbury 91.5

Lynnfield 53.5

It was a tough loss to a “very talented” Amesbury team according to Lynnfield (1-2) coach William Wallace. Snagging first place for the Pioneers were Chase Goldberg (javelin), Ethan Downey (110 meter hurdles), Ryan DeBenedictis (vault), and Ethan Francis (long jump). 

Jared Bernabei has qualified for the state tournament for Lynnfield, which will compete Saturday at the Henry Sheldon Meet in Triton.

Peabody 94

Masco 42

First place (Peabody): Brian Stevens (triple jump), Alex Jackson (shot put, discus), Domenic Scalese (javelin), Sebastian Pizarro (400 meter hurdles, 400 meters), Peyton Smith (110 meter hurdles), Eli Batista (100 meters), Justin Franco (200 meters), Owen Brennan (1 mile), Dylan Faletra (2 mile).

First place (Marblehead): Keira Sweetnam (high jump, triple jump), Claire Davis (long jump), Rachael Albert (shot put, discus), Sierra Leinberry (javelin), Devin Whalen (400 meters), Cate Trautman (200 meters), Gabrielle Hendy (400 meters), Katherine Twomey (800 meters), Marrietta O’Connell (2 mile).

First place (Peabody): Lindsey Wilson (high jump, triple jump, 110 meter hurdles), Brianna Ewansiha (high jump), Aaliyah Callahan (shot put, discus), Alessandra Forgione (javelin), Tamara Kemigisha (400 meter hurdles), Savanna Vargas (100 meters, 200 meters), Mimi Batista (400 meters), Kyra Buckley (1 mile), Leah Buckley (2 mile).
