LYNN — Lights, camera, action. The highly-anticipated baseball game between inter-city rivals Lynn English and Lynn Classical had cameras and action, but no lights. The game was suspended in the third inning due to the lights going out in the outfield.

At newly-renovated Fraser Field in Lynn, both English and Classical were well-represented in the stands. As for the fan experience, the game didn’t disappoint as Classical led 4-2.

English led things off, scoring a run in the first inning after Jariel Benzan got hit by a pitch while the bases were loaded, allowing Janier Rodriguez to walk home from third. The Rams got out of the inning allowing just one run.

Next, it was Classical’s turn to respond. Almani Gerardo hit a deep fly ball to right center field, eventually landing at the wall. Gerardo showed off his speed, rounding second and making it safely to third with only one out.

After Brady Warren walked, Christian Spates came to the plate. Spates waited for his pitch before connecting on one, bringing home Gerardo to tie the game 1-1.

Classical’s momentum continued – that’s because Christian Figueroa recorded an RBI with an infield single to put the Rams ahead 2-1.

Senior Kevin Whalen then brought both Spates and Figueroa home with a two-out, two-RBI double for the Rams. Suddenly, Classical led 4-2.

A scoreless second inning brought English back to the plate in the third inning. After two consecutive walks, Kenry Manzanillo drove a ball to deep left field that brought home a run to cut Classical’s lead to 4-2.

English had its bases loaded with just one out – then the lights went out. After a 10-minute delay and a few flickers, the lights shut back off, leading to a suspended game.

At press time, the game has not been rescheduled.
