LYNN — The first Dick Maag JV Memorial Tournament was held at Fraser Field this weekend, featuring the junior varsity teams of Swampscott, Lynn Tech, St. Mary’s, and Lynn Classical.

Maag passed away in March at age 83. He coached baseball at Classical for more than 20 years and was a part of Lynn’s school system for 38.

Classical coach Pat Whalen created the tournament after hearing of Maag’s passing.

“We used to go to Frank Carey’s baseball camps when we were younger and Dick Maag helped at the camps,” Whalen said. “Once we found out he passed a few months ago, we knew it was the right name to use.”

“Dick Maag was an incredible person that left a huge legacy at not only Lynn Classical, but around the North Shore with his years of service to the youth with his baseball mind,” Whalen said. “We wanted to find a way to honor his legacy after his recent passing.”

The tournament kicked off with a first pitch ceremony thrown by Carey, a longtime friend of Maag.

As for the action, the championship game was between Swampscott and St. Mary’s. The Spartans won 10-5 with tournament MVP Jake Peterson picking up the win with four strikeouts and two hits allowed.

St. Mary’s George Iliopulos and Jimmy Jennings each went 2-for-2 with two RBI.

The all-tournament team consisted of Calvin Reynolds from Lynn Classical, Gavin Collins from Lynn Tech, Devin Duval from St. Marys, and Zach Alex from Swampscott.

“The games were played at Fraser Field. We would like to thank Rich Avery for the opportunity to give the JV players a chance to play on the new turf,” Whalen said. “I also want to thank Mike Luciano for helping me come up with the idea of creating a tournament for the JV players.”
