May 16, 2023 by Joey Barrett

In Tuesday’s Greater Boston League track meet at Manning Field, the Lynn English girls track team defeated Lynn Classical 87-45, while Classical’s boys team beat English 72-52.

For the girls, English’s Victoria Samuel won the triple jump and 100m (12.7), while Madisen McHale (mile – 6:48.6), Tiana Allen (javelin – 69′ 7), Darrynn Desrameaux (discus – 73′ 9.75), Layla Betancur-Cardona (shot put – 29′ 2.5), and Jossycah Emmanuel (100mh – 19.9) all caught eyes in their respective events. The 4×100 relay team finished first, also.

“I was really happy today,” English coach Brenda Martin said. “The girls did really well today.”

On the boys’ side, Classical’s Jabin Pierre ran the 100m in 11.2s, while John Nasky did so in 11.4s. English’s Eamon McHale won the mile with a time of 4.57.9.

BASEBALL

Lynnfield 7
Triton 2

Lynnfield’s baseball team (12-3) won its second straight game Tuesday with a 7-2 win against Triton. The Pioneers totaled 10 hits and received strong pitching from Madux Iovinelli (5 hits allowed across 7 innings).

Dan Dorman led the way offensively, snagging three hits and five RBI.

“He hit the ball well today,” Lynnfield coach John O’Brien said.

Alex Gentile, Dave Tracy, and Henry Caufield each registered a hit and an RBI.

St. Mary’s 7
Spellman 4

The Spartans (9-6) are winners of five straight after handling Cardinal Spellman 7-4 on Tuesday. Tommy Falasca got the nod and didn’t disappoint, allowing two hits and striking out six across five innings. The do-it-all Spartan also blasted a home run.

Tad Giardina roped three doubles that drove in two St. Mary’s runs.

Fenwick 3
Stang 2

Fenwick’s baseball team took care of conference opponent Bishop Stang, escaping by one run on Tuesday. Michael Geissler picked up 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits in a complete game victory.

Will McFadden registered an RBI and two runs, while Josh Scali and Cormac Heney had the other RBI.

Gloucester 10
English 0

The Lynn English baseball team stayed in it until the fourth inning, but Gloucester ripped seven runs across the last three innings to beat the Bulldogs.

A double from Jason Figuereo in the second inning was English’s lone hit. He also struck out three Fishermen on the bump.

St. Paul 3
St. John’s Prep 1

Prep’s Cam LaGrassa, Will Shaheen, Johnny Tighe, and Jordan Henriquez all recorded hits, but unfortunately for the Eagles, that would be all.

St. Paul capitalized on its five hits to score three runs in a defensive thriller. Jack Sarnon (5 strikeouts) and Anthony Romana (4) pitched well for the Eagles.

BOYS LACROSSE

St John’s Prep 12
Bishop Guertin 11

The St. John’s Prep Eagles (14-2) picked up an out-of-state road win at Bishop Guertin (8-3) on Tuesday. Matt Morrow led the Eagles with a hat-trick, while Nick Schibli, Greyson Ambrosh, and Jack Weissenburger all played well defensively.

Jimmy Ayers and Will Sawyer each scored a pair, while Jake Vana and Luke Kelly each recorded one goal and one assist. Chris Esposito won 12 of 24 faceoffs and Gavin Kornitsky made six saves for the Eagles.

BOYS TENNIS

Marblehead 5
Salem 0

Marblehead (12-2) moved to a perfect 9-0 in the Northeastern Conference after scaring away some Witches on Tuesday. And talk about depth – the Magicians rested six of their top seven players.

Etan Farfel, Anthony Vizy, and co-captain Jack Wykes impressed in singles, while the duos of Austin Bacon-Leo Winocour and Quinn Fletcher-Ben Zaltsman got the job done in doubles.

The Magicians are also ranked eighth in the Division 2 MIAA power rankings.

Bishop Feehan 5
St. Mary’s 0

The St. Mary’s boys tennis team (6-6) concluded a strong regular season, but was shutout by the Shamrocks of Bishop Feehan Tuesday. Head coach Steve McGuirk said his team is on to the state tournament, where the Spartans look to make some noise in Division 3.
