LYNN — The fire in Lynn Woods Reservation that has been burning since the afternoon of May 12 is contained for now, according to the Lynn Fire Department.
“The water drops conducted by the Massachusetts State Police yesterday were successful. While there are still smoldering trees and stumps within the burn area, the running lines of fire have been contained,” a Facebook post from LFD said.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation will continue to monitor the area. Some trees are being assessed and may have to come down, District Fire Chief Joseph Zukas said.
“The northern part of Lynn Woods remains closed due to safety concerns and the ongoing dry conditions. We will advise when this part has reopened. How these fires have started remains under investigation,” the post said.
The fire broke out Friday afternoon and initially posed a threat to houses near Emerald Drive, but Zukas said Sunday that it is no longer a danger to homes near the woods. Over the course of the weekend, the fire moved deeper into the woods, and was burning in an area near Stone Tower and another area close to the banks of Walden Pond, Zukas said.
